Job Summary and Qualifications

The Phlebotomist performs blood draws on patients needing diagnostic testing. The Phlebotomist is supervised by and works with RNs to achieve timely pre-procedure blood draws and testing. The Phlebotomist must have interpersonal skills to successfully interact with patients, families, team members, physicians, and ancillary staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of physiology and the venous system, and collection techniques used to draw blood.
  • Collect blood samples following laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Decide the best method for drawing blood depending on the patient.
  • Practice proper patient identification.
  • Label blood vials according to procedures, including using automated patient identification systems.

Qualifications include:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a certified phlebotomy course (strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated phlebotomy experience.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with co-workers, staff, patients, families, and vendors.
  • Good phlebotomy, computer, and communication skills.
