Job description

  • Performs all specimen collection procedures and provides assistance to Department technical and clerical staff.
  • Obtains blood and nonblood specimens, including urine, sputum, and throat swabs, for laboratory testing.
  • Checks test requisitions or computer labels for correctness and completeness and reports discrepancies for correction.
  • Verifies positive patient identification.
  • Performs venipunctures and finger-sticks using aseptic technique and follows department and hospital isolation procedures.
  • Ensures specimen requirements are met and maintains specimen integrity.
  • Performs therapeutic drug-monitoring assay collections and verifies last dose/date/time with nursing personnel.
  • Initials, dates, and times all collections.
  • Accessions and processes specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Maintains competency in specimen collection, patient identification, labeling, specimen integrity, and LIS documentation.
  • Reassures patients and ensures comfort before leaving the bedside or releasing patients.
  • Delivers verified specimens to appropriate areas and orders venipuncture collection in the LIS.
  • Performs specimen collection at off-site locations, other healthcare facilities, and hospital-sponsored special programs.
  • Provides specimen collection information to requesting clients using the Laboratory Specimen Collection Manual and laboratory rolodex.
  • Queries the LIS for telephone requests for patient results and documents appropriately.
  • Assists with training students and new staff in specimen collection procedures, including LIS aspects.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects assigned by the supervisor or director.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a NAACLS approved phlebotomy program preferred.
  • Phlebotomist certification with ASCP or AMT preferred.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served on assigned unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served.
  • Able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, needed by the neonate, pediatric, adolescent and/or geriatric patient group.
  • Varying shifts/weekends scheduled.
  • 32 scheduled weekly hours.
