Job summary

The Cancer & Hematology Centers in Michigan's Grand Rapids area is seeking a dedicated Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist to join our oncology support team.

You will perform venipunctures, label specimens, and assist lab staff, contributing to compassionate, patients-first cancer care close to home. High school diploma required; medical assistant degree preferred; two years of related experience encouraged.

Qualifications

  • Two years related work experience.
  • Medical terminology extremely helpful.
  • Phlebotomy procedures knowledge preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and finger sticks per policies.
  • Identify patients accurately and label/handle specimens.
  • Determine and collect appropriate tubes for tests.
  • Monitor phlebotomy supplies and inform when replenishment is needed.
  • Enter new patients into LIS and order tests; print and fax reports as needed.
  • Maintain a safe environment by following safety policies and keep area stocked.
  • Assist the medical technologist with tasks such as answering phones, lab billing, coordinating patient care, and helping with sample distribution.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned and provide compassionate care close to home.

Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for performing venipunctures and finger sticks in accordance with written policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for accurately identifying patients and properly labeling and handling specimens.
  • Determines and draws the proper collection tubes for tests requested.
  • Responsible for monitoring phlebotomy supplies and notifying manager when replenishing needed.
  • Able to correctly enter new patients into the laboratory information system and properly order tests on existing patients. Designate in system where send out tests are sent. Able to print and fax reports through system.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by strict adherence to company safety policies and procedures. Is alert to the existence of safety hazards and reports any unsafe conditions to the safety officer. Keeps phlebotomy area clean and well stocked.
  • Able to assist the medical technologist with a variety of tasks when applicable such as answering the phone, balancing lab billing, ordering send out tests, coordinating patient care with the physicians and nurses, helping with blood product distribution and assisting with bone marrow biopsies.
  • All other duties as assigned. Providing advanced treatments and compassionate care close to home.
