Job description

Department Overview

The Phlebotomist collects blood, urine, stool, and sputum specimens from patients, as ordered by healthcare providers, for use in performing diagnostic or prognostic tests. The role provides clerical, transportation, and non-technical support to the laboratory. The primary focus is to deliver phlebotomy services to outpatients at the Beaverton Walk-In Clinic and support laboratory operations by ordering tests via the hospital information system (HIS) or laboratory information system (LIS). The position requires close collaboration with the Clinic Team and department staff to ensure prompt, courteous, and comprehensive service, maintaining a professional, customer-focused approach. Tasks are performed under the guidance of the Community Hematology Oncology (CHO) Laboratory Manager, fostering a collaborative environment that integrates education, research, and clinical leadership.

Function/Duties of Position

Outpatient Specimen Collection and Processing

  • Collect specimens from outpatients using approved methods, following policies outlined in the Phlebotomy Procedure Manual.
  • Assist coworkers as needed.
  • Greet patients and interact professionally and courteously.
  • Identify patients accurately using two identifiers.
  • Perform venipuncture on adult and pediatric patients following approved procedures.
  • Label tubes in the presence of the patient.
  • Transport specimens to the lab promptly.

Clerical and Customer Service Functions

  • Answer multi-line phones, clarify orders, notify clinics and providers of specimen issues.
  • Communicate clearly with staff and patients.
  • Meet customer needs proactively.
  • Interact courteously with all professional staff.
  • Provide high-level customer service through timely responses, positive interactions, effective communication, and thorough problem-solving.

Order Entry and Label Generation

  • Support the team by providing necessary paperwork and labels for specimen collection.
  • Verify or place orders using Epic or Epic Beaker.
  • Generate labels via OE or LIS.
  • Apply collection info and close patient charts.
  • Manage order credits and results as needed.
  • Follow downtime procedures during equipment or Epic system failures.

Other Duties

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, completion of a phlebotomy training program with clinical rotation or recent (within 12 months) phlebotomy experience in a clinical lab. Certification (ASCP, NHA, RPT, or equivalent) required or to be completed within the first year of employment.OR
  • One year of college coursework in psychology, communications, or science plus one year of dedicated phlebotomy experience/training in a clinical setting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy.
  • Experience with Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems.
  • Experience with inpatient and outpatient pediatric and adult patients.
Additional Details

This role serves the Ambulatory Services at the Beaverton Walk-In Clinic. Work hours may vary based on clinic needs and may include nights, weekends, and holidays. The position may require travel between laboratory or hospital sites, exposure to biohazards, chemical hazards, radiation, and working in noisy, crowded environments. PPE usage and temperature fluctuations are also possible.
