Job summary

SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - Madison is seeking a Phlebotomist to join the Phlebotomy department in Madison, Wisconsin. You will collect and prepare blood specimens for laboratory testing and ensure accurate labeling to support patient care.

Schedule is 40 hours per week on the night shift with weekend on-call rotation. You will maintain collection areas and equipment and perform record-keeping duties as part of the laboratory team.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED (or 10 years of work experience).
  • No prior experience required for entry-level.
  • BLS HealthCare Provider certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Collects blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary technique per guidelines.
  • Delivers samples to the laboratory within established time frames.
  • May perform waived testing.
  • May perform a variety of administrative duties.
  • Identifies patients using two identifiers.
  • Maintains alertness and works in a safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements
Primary Responsibilities
  • Collects blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary technique and processes the samples according to laboratory guidelines.
  • Delivers samples to the laboratory in established time frames.
  • May perform waived testing.
  • May perform a variety of administrative duties to support the department.
  • Identifies patients using two identifiers.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing.
Required Professional License And/Or Certifications
  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) - American Heart Association (AHA)
