Job summary

Procter & Gamble is seeking a proactive PhD Summer Intern to contribute to a research project on functional materials. The role centers on developing and evaluating biopolymers with defined functionalities, using bacterial fermentation and ex-situ modification techniques.

You will culture bacteria, perform microbiological assays, and analyze data to recommend potential consumer product applications in areas such as paper, textiles, or general consumer goods.

Qualifications

• Working towards a PhD in microbiology, chemical biology, polymer/material chemistry.
• Skilled in aseptic technique, bacterial culturing, basic microbiological assays, and lab safety.
• Proficient in setting up, running, and monitoring chemical reactions.
• Proactively drives project outcomes with strong problem-solving in dynamic lab environments.
• Available to work a 12-week internship May/early June to August 2027, 5 days a week in Mason Biotech Center location.

Responsibilities

• Synthesize biopolymers with predefined functionality during bacterial fermentation.
• Create a library of biopolymers with tailored properties and test in lab settings.
• Provide recommendations on antimicrobial efficacy and potential consumer-applications.
