Job summary

Waymo LLC in San Francisco is seeking a PhD candidate for a hybrid onsite internship to work on deep learning for the Waymo Driver. You will research, design, and implement novel neural architectures and loss objectives in Python and Jax for Waymo’s Large Selection model, and train large-scale networks using distributed TPU infrastructure.

You should be pursuing a Ph.D. in ML or related field, with strong Python skills and experience in JAX or PyTorch, plus a solid foundation in DL,

Qualifications

• Pursuing a PhD in ML or related quantitative field.
• Strong hands-on proficiency in Python with a modern DL framework (e.g., JAX, PyTorch).
• Solid mathematical foundation in deep learning, optimization, and empirical model diagnostics.
• Experience designing and analyzing rigorous ML experiments on large-scale datasets.

Responsibilities

• Research, design, and implement novel deep learning architectures, multi-task loss formulations, and ranking objectives in Python and Jax for Waymo’s Large Selection model.
• Train and diagnose large-scale neural networks using distributed TPU infrastructure, analyzing training dynamics and representation quality.
• Evaluate trained models across benchmarks, linking mathematical choices to real-world vehicle behavior.
