Job summary

OhioHealth is seeking a Pharmacy Technician Trainee to assist pharmacists in interpreting, preparing, labeling, and distributing pharmacy products for patient use, considering patient age and other factors.

Under supervision, you will enter orders, affix labels, stock drugs, and assist with sterile and non-sterile compounding following Ohio regulations, contributing to safe patient care and accurate reimbursement.

  • Stocking dangerous drugs and retrieving those drugs from inventory.
  • Counting and pouring dangerous drugs into containers.
  • Placing dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist.
  • Non-sterile drug and sterile drug compounding following required training.
  • Packaging and selling a dangerous drug to a patient or patient representative.
  • Sending or receiving electronic prescriptions between pharmacies.

Job Description Summary:

This position works under the direction of a registered pharmacist to interpret, obtain, prepare/compound, label, and distribute pharmacy products for patient use while taking into consideration patient age and any other relevant information. They document the distribution of medication for proper use and reimbursement in accordance with department policy.

Responsibilities And Duties:
  • A pharmacy technician trainee may, under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, engage in the following activities at a location licensed as a terminal distributor of dangerous drugs to the extent that the activities do not require the exercise of professional judgment:
  • Accepting new written, faxed or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or a prescriber's agent but shall not include verbal orders;
  • Entering information into and retrieving information from a database or patient profile;
  • Preparing and affixing labels;
  • Stocking dangerous drugs and retrieving those drugs from inventory;
  • Counting and pouring dangerous drugs into containers;
  • Placing dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist;
  • Non-sterile drug compounding following the completion of site-specific training pursuant to rule 4729:3-3-02 of the Administrative Code;
  • Sterile drug compounding following the completion of a site-specific training pursuant to rule 4729:3-3-02 of the Administrative Code;
  • Packaging and selling a dangerous drug to a patient or patient representative;
  • Sending or receiving electronic prescriptions between pharmacies accessing the same prescription records in a centralized database or pharmacy computers linked in any other manner.

Completes the didactic learning modules as a requirement of the technician training program

Completes the OhioHealth experiential training components as a requirement of the technician training program

Meets the requirements for eligibility to take the PTCB or ExCPT board certification exam within 6 months of hire

Percentages of Tasks:
  • 15% -- Reviews and interprets orders for pharmacy products needed for patient care, performs any necessary interventions, and processes according to department policy and procedure
  • 20% -- Obtains, prepares, and labels pharmacy products, according to department policy for final distribution
  • 15% -- Distributes pharmacy products to ensure availability for patient care
  • 15% -- Produces billing monitoring and usage documentation of pharmacy products for billing and inventory purposes
  • 10% -- Maintains inventory systems and integrity of pharmacy products to enable sufficient distribution
  • 10% -- Submits medication changes data to assure proper reimbursement.
  • 5% -- Efficiently operates computer systems. Solves problems related to operation of computers, printers, and other electronic equipment in the department, and contacts service companies when needed.
