Summary
The Pharmacy Technician in Training is an entry-level position. Following a training period, the Technician in Training should be able to understand, dispense, and prepare medication orders, compound IVs, charge and credit, answer phones and doors, and stock the department.
Responsibilities
- (20%) Runs reports, pulls medications and restocks Automated Dispensing Machines, follows up on narcotic discrepancies, troubleshoots problems, aids and trains nurses on dispensing problems.
- (20%) Performs sterile compounding per USP 797 guidelines and non‑sterile compounding per USP 795 guidelines. Uses universal precautions when compounding or manipulating biologic products. Performs daily, monthly, and ad hoc cleaning/disinfection of designated IV room areas using MyMichigan-approved cleaning solutions.
- (15%) Prepares orders and maintains inventory for the pharmacy department accurately and timely.
- (15%) Fills, reconciles and exchanges carts/IV batches using the HER and dispensing technologies.
- (15%) Accurately repackages bulk medications into Unit Dose form using repackaging technologies and equipment.
- (15%) Replaces and fills floor stock: fills Emergency Medical Services (EMS) boxes, crash cart trays, open heart medications and anesthesia carts and delivers to appropriate area; completes monthly floor stock on other medical center departments; stocks UD area and IV room if needed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Compounds oral and topical solutions and ointments.
- Answers phone, retrieves tubes and faxes.
- Helps with duties as directed by the pharmacist on duty.
- Able to add barcodes to products, including compounded items, Intravenous Piggy‑Back (IVPB).
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience, Training and Skills
- Required enrollment in a pharmacy training program upon hire.
- Successful completion of annual exam for Aseptic Technique within 90 days of hire and every 6 months thereafter.
- Computer experience required; proficiency with Microsoft Windows.
- Good math skills (pass a standard test).
- Organizational skills; team player; ability to work under high pressure and time constraints.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups.
- Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
- Medical Center or Retail Pharmacy experience preferred.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief and death.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
- Must be able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
- Overall vision and hearing are required, with or without assistance.
- Frequently required to sit, stand or walk for long periods; may require postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
- Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow MyMichigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, attend regularly and stay awake.
- Overall dexterity required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling; may require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
- Physical demand level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) lift or carry 11‑20 lbs.; frequently (34‑66% of the workday) lift 10 lbs. and/or walk/stand/push/pull of arm/leg controls.
