Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Pharmaceutical Services or a Registered Pharmacist - and according to the standard procedures - compounds and dispenses medications and pharmaceutical supplies upon receiving prescriptions from physicians or other qualified prescribers, dispenses additives for IV and irrigation solutions, mixes IV additive solutions as required using aseptic technique and the laminar flow hood, types labels, prepares and files charge slips, and performs other related duties.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, weigh measures and mix ingredients, compounds and prepare medications, emulsions, liquids, powders, and ointments using such equipment as graduates, balance, mortars, pestles and funnels.
- Replenish medications in emergency crash carts, EMT boxes, or floor stock storage accurately.
- Accurately fill bottles, capsules, or other package forms with measured amounts of medication according to the prescription.
- Prepackage bulk medications in unit dose packages accurately within specified time periods.
- Make rounds delivering prescriptions to the nursing stations.
- File physician’s orders.
- Data entry of physicians' orders and patient information into the pharmacy computer system.
- Utilize and operate automated dispensing technology (Omnicell) to facilitate inventory management and medication storage.
- Charge appropriate patient and/or patient care area for medications and supplies as outlined by standard departmental procedures.
- Organize outdated or overstocked medications to ship back to manufacturers for credit.
- Regularly dispense additives for IV and irrigating solutions. Mix IV additive solutions and chemotherapy as required using aseptic technique with the laminar flow hood.
- Prepare intravenous mixtures or other sterile products (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) accurately and according to established standards.
- Clean the laminar flow hood and working area.
- Prepare reports on IV activity as requested on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
Required Qualifications
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Licensed to practice as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan.
- Possess 6 months of job-related experience or completion of a pharmacy technician-training program or currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy.
- Trained and educated in age-specific categories being served: neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
- Ability to operate office-related equipment (computer terminal).
