Summary
The Pharmacy Technician is an entry-level position. Following a training period, the Technician should be able to decipher and enter orders on the computer, compound IVs, charge and credit, fill orders, answer phones and doors, and stock the department.
Responsibilities
- Runs reports, pulls medications and restocks Automated Dispensing Machines, follows up on narcotic discrepancies, trouble‑shoots problems, aids and trains nurses on dispensing problems. (20%)
- Compounds IV and piggyback medications, using aseptic technique and universal precautions; follows USP 797 guidelines. (20%)
- Run labels using the computer in an accurate and timely manner. (15%)
- Fills, reconciles and exchanges 24 hour UD medicine carts using McKesson robot and Cerner. (15%)
- Repackages non-unit dose medications correctly using PacMed and McKesson repackager. (15%)
- Replaces and fills floor stock: fills EMS boxes, crash cart trays, open heart meds and Omnicell Anesthesia carts and delivers to appropriate area; completes monthly floor stock on other hospital departments; stocks UD area and IV room if needed. (15%)
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Compounds oral and topical solutions and ointments. Answers phone, retrieves tubes and faxes.
- Helps with duties as directed by the pharmacist on duty.
- Able to add barcodes to products, including compounded items, IVPB’s, etc using the MILT 3.0 program, and using PharmNet Inpatient Formulary Manager to check NDC numbers and barcodes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensure
Credential: Pharmacy Technician Licensure
Equivalent Experience: New hires and transfers before October 1, 2015 must possess a full technician license or limited pharmacy license through the state of Michigan. Effective October 1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position must possess a pharmacy technician temporary, limited or full license through the state of Michigan. Individuals with a temporary license must obtain a full license within 365 days.
Required Education
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Qualifications
- Successful completion of annual exam for Aseptic Technique within 90 days of hire and annually thereafter required.
- Computer experience required; good math skills (pass a standard test); good organizational skills; team player; ability to work under high pressure and time constraints.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels.
- Competency in Microsoft Windows required.
- Medical terminology knowledge preferred; hospital or retail pharmacy experience preferred.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
- Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
- Ability to move freely about facility, with or without assistance; must perform job functions as outlined.
- Overall vision and hearing necessary with or without assisted device.
- Requires frequent sitting/standing/walking for long periods; may require postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance and stay awake.
- Physical demand: Light. Must occasionally lift 11–20 lbs; frequently 10 lbs; walk/stand/push/pull of arm/leg controls.
