Job summary

JobRx, Inc. seeks a Pharmacy Technician under the clinical supervision of a licensed pharmacist to compound sterile products and prepare unit-of-use pharmaceuticals for dispensing.

The role ensures delivery to patient care areas and maintains pharmacy working inventory. Ideal candidates have completed a pharmacy technician training program, hold Michigan certification, and possess at least one year of experience.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent and completion of an approved pharmacy technician training program.
  • Current certification through the State of Michigan is required; CPhT must be acquired within one year.
  • A minimum of one year experience as a pharmacy technician is required.

Responsibilities

  • Compound sterile products and prepare unit-of-use pharmaceuticals under pharmacist supervision.
  • Package bulk products into unit-of-use packaging.
  • Select medications for patients based on computer-generated information.
  • Verify accuracy of medications for automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Process patient charges and credits using the department computer.
  • Deliver pharmaceuticals to patient care areas and refill cabinets.
  • Assist pharmacists with data collection for pharmaceutical care.
  • Maintain department inventory and stock levels.

Job description

Under the clinical supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and legal and regulatory requirements, compounds sterile products and prepares unit-of-use pharmaceuticals for dispensing and ensures delivery of products and pharmaceutical supplies to patient care areas. Maintains pharmacy working inventory.

Prepares pharmaceuticals for dispensing to patients by:
  • Packaging bulk products into unit-of-use packaging.
  • Compounding products by combining several ingredients after review of calculations and measures by a licensed pharmacist.
  • Selecting from stock areas, medications for individual patients based on computer-generated information.
  • Selecting from stock areas, medications for newly received patient and refill prescriptions based on computer-generated labels and/or reports and verbal and written instructions.
  • Selecting and verifying accuracy of medications to be replaced in unit-based automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Generating reports pick lists and labels as required.
Maintains working inventory within established department guidelines by:
  • Reviewing stock levels and recording for order.
  • Removing stock from storage areas and replenishing active use areas.
  • Replenishing contents of various kits, trays, carts, etc., maintained for specialty areas.
  • Routinely checking storage areas for outdated product, removing from stock and placing in designated areas according to departmental policies.
Processes patient charges and credits by:
  • Validating and charging Fill and Update Lists using the department computer.
  • Entering charges and credits into the department computer from various sources such as documents, discontinued medications and/or medications collected following patient discharge.
Assures delivery of pharmaceuticals to patient care areas by:
  • Carrying prepared pharmaceuticals to all patient care areas and placing them in prescribed locations, including replenishing unit-based automated dispensing cabinets. This may include delivering medication carts to patient care areas and exchanging drawers or other containers on a daily basis.
Assists pharmacist in provision of pharmaceutical care by:
  • Reviewing and collecting data used by pharmacists in pharmaceutical care.
  • Collecting and entering data into the pharmacy information system as directed.
  • Answering telephone calls and greeting staff and responding appropriately if qualified or authorized to do so.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
  • Performing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
  • Performing inspections of assigned patient care areas using printed guidelines.
  • Collecting data, conducting quality monitors and completing documentation as assigned.
  • Maintaining logs, records and other required documentation accurately, filing documents in appropriate locations.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.
Education and Experience
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and successful completion of a pharmacy technician training program approved by the State of Michigan. Current certification through the State of Michigan is required. Certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) must be acquired within one year of employment. A minimum of one year experience working as a pharmacy technician is required.

  • Demonstrates mathematical skills necessary to accurately compute fractions, ratios, percentages and totals.
  • Requires knowledge of and skill in aseptic technique.

Physical Demands
  • Requires physical ability and stamina (to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and to remain standing or walking for prolonged periods of time) to perform the essential functions of the position.
