Assists in most aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. Technicians may prepare sterile products and chemotherapy, be responsible for controlled substance distribution, or other specialized duties within the pharmacy. Technicians operate under the supervision of a pharmacist, following standard procedures and guidelines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
For West Virginia Pharmacy Techs:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Four years of pharmacy technician or healthcare experience, and nationally certified (PTCB or EXCPT) within 15 months of hire, and registered with the state Board of Pharmacy within 15 months of hire (except PA).
- Must complete job-specific competencies or obtain specialty certification within 90 days of hire.
- Must be registered with the state Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire (except PA).
For Maryland Pharmacy Techs:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Four years of pharmacy technician experience, and registered with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy.
- Must complete job-specific competencies or obtain specialty certification within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's degree, post-high school education in a science field, or graduation from a pharmacy technician training program.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following statements describe the general nature of work performed by individuals in this position. They are not exhaustive, and other duties may be assigned.
- Read physicians' orders, prepare medications, deliver medications, and order and deliver drug supplies for patient care units.
- Read physician's orders and prepare medications for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for all patient populations.
- Understand standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols used in prescribing and dispensing medications.
- Interpret medication lists and replenish patient medications, delivering contents to patient care areas as scheduled.
- Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances, maintaining all necessary records.
- Manage medication inventory, replacing outdated or deteriorated medications and replenishing supplies.
- Label products appropriately.
- Perform arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations.
- Check prescribed doses for appropriateness based on patient weight and age.
- Work efficiently and accurately according to departmental standards.
- Prepare and label prepackaged medications based on usage patterns and maintain related records.
- Maintain inventory and supplies in pharmacy service areas.
- Answer and direct telephone calls appropriately.
- Keep pharmacy and drug storage areas clean and organized.
- Assist in training pharmacy technicians.
- Participate in safety and quality improvement projects.
- Serve as an active member of departmental or hospital committees.
- Act as a subject matter expert in pharmacy operations.
- Mentor or role model for Pharmacy Technician I or II.
- Assist in sterile product preparation under pharmacist supervision, including intravenous admixtures and sterile solutions, using aseptic technique.
- Enter information related to parenteral and injectable products accurately into pharmacy computer systems.
- Manage controlled substances in the health system.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to walk, stand, or sit for long periods, lift up to 30 pounds, push 50 pounds, and have dexterity for handling and reaching.
