Job summary

Southern Ohio Medical Center is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support the RX department under supervision. The role focuses on preparing and distributing medications, performing quality control, and handling related duties in a fast-paced hospital setting.

Candidates must have a high school diploma, a state license/registration as required (PTCB/NHA), and pharmacy tech registration in Ohio (and Kentucky if applicable).

Qualifications

• National Qualification test (PTCB or NHA) required
• Ohio/Kentucky Pharmacy Technician Registration required
• Pharmacy Technician training or prior technician work experience required

Responsibilities

• Profiles physician orders in computer system for pharmacist review.
• Provides prompt, efficient, and courteous service; answer telephone inquiries.
• Responsible for general cleanliness of work area/department.
• Ability to recognize narcotic discrepancies and perform audits as necessary.
• Delivers medications to Meds to Beds patients (in Emergency Room).
• Enters patient charges/credits into computer profile system.
• Checks incoming orders of medications and pharmacy supplies against purchase requisitions for accuracy.
• Reviews patient medication profile to identify medications available through Patient Assistance.
• Contacts drug manufacturer for forms needed and/or enrolling patients for programs.
• Performs medication reconciliation by interviewing patients/family.
• Contacts pharmacies, nursing homes, and the VA for home medications.
• Obtains income documentation from patients for various programs.
• Completes applications and obtains prescriptions for manufacturer programs; coordinates with physician as needed.
• Educates patient on re-ordering prescriptions.
• Communicates with Purchasing Agent regarding stock levels and inventory.

GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the direction and supervision of the Pharmacist on duty, the Pharmacy Supervisor, and the Community Pharmacy Manager. The Pharmacy Technician's primary job function is to prepare and distribute medications. Performs quality control, routine maintenance and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

Licensure

• Successful completion of National Qualification test required (PTCB or NHA)
• For Ohio: State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy Certified Technician Registration required
• For Kentucky: State of Kentucky Board of Pharmacy Technician Registration Required

Experience

• Pharmacy Technician training program or certification or prior technician work experience required.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

1. Profiles physician orders in computer system for pharmacist review.
2. Provides prompt, efficient, and courteous service, answer telephone inquiries; takes messages when necessary or directs inquiry to the appropriate person.
3. Responsible for general cleanliness of work area/department.
4. Ability to recognize narcotic discrepancies and perform audits as necessary.
5. Delivers medications to Meds to Beds patients (in Emergency Room).
6. Enters patient charges/credits into computer profile system.
7. Checks incoming orders of medications and pharmacy supplies against purchase requisitions for accuracy and completeness.
8. Reviews patient medication profile to identify medications available through Patient Assistance.
9. Contacts drug manufacturer for any application forms needed and/or enrolling patients for various programs over the phone/internet.
10. Performs medication reconciliation by interviewing patients and/or family member to validate home medications.
11. Contacts pharmacies, nursing homes, and the Veteran Affairs for a complete list of home medications.
12. Obtains necessary income documentation from patients for various programs.
13. Completes applications and obtains prescriptions for each manufacturer's applications. May coordinate with physician regarding and substitutions and obtains signed applications/prescriptions.
14. Educates patient on his/her responsibility for re-ordering prescriptions.
15. Communicates with Purchasing Agent regarding stock levels and items needed to assure adequate inventory. Assures stock rotation and placement of items in appropriate storage areas.
