Qualifications

  • Graduate with a High School Diploma or equivalent credential
  • Must hold active NJ Board of Pharmacy registration as a Pharmacy Technician
  • PTCB certification required within 6 months of employment
  • Strong baseline knowledge of sterile product preparation, including antineoplastic and hazardous compounding workflows
  • Prior hospital pharmacy or sterile cleanroom experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Prepares sterile intravenous admixtures, explains the process, and positions hazardous and non-hazardous products for patient delivery
  • Operates Pyxis and other dispensing systems and compounding tools to ensure safe environments
  • Assist pharmacists and clinical teams during compounding runs and medication tracking
  • Sets up sterile trays and supplies following aseptic technique and handles hazardous materials
  • Monitors inventory levels and communicates changes to pharmacy leadership
  • Uses hospital software to record compounding details and retrieve batch logs
  • Applies USP 797 and USP 800 knowledge to daily practice
  • Collaborates with nursing and medical staff in infusion center and cancer center environments
  • Demonstrates initiative and ability to multi-task under time pressures
  • Familiarity with regulatory safety guidelines is preferred

Pharmacy Technician - Oncology – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacy Technician - Oncology plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they perform complex technical, clerical, and compounding procedures according to strict medical, legal, and professional pharmaceutical standards. They are responsible for exercising professional judgment during medication preparation, ensuring accurate sterile compounding, delivering age-specific care support, and maintaining seamless workflow collaboration within the infusion center pharmacy department.

A typical day for a Pharmacy Technician - Oncology may include:
  • Prepares sterile intravenous admixtures, clearly explains the process, and positions hazardous and non-hazardous products for safe patient delivery
  • Operates automated dispensing systems, Pyxis machines, biological safety cabinets, and compounding tools necessary to ensure a safe and accurate diagnostic and therapeutic procedure environment
  • Assist pharmacists and clinical teams during compounding runs and medication tracking by auditing, circulating, or monitoring cleanroom activities
  • Sets up sterile trays and essential compounding supplies following aseptic technique, handles hazardous materials, and reviews inventories to assist with waste management
  • Calibrates, maintains, and adjusts laminar airflow hoods, and reports equipment failures or environmental deviations immediately to leadership
  • Monitors and calls out automated inventory levels, alerting the pharmacy management team immediately to any changes in stock or expired product conditions
  • Utilizes compounding tracking systems and hospital software to enter accurately identified and verified records of mixtures, and retrieves old batch logs when necessary
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy protocols including USP 797, USP 800, math calculations, and generic-trade name relationships
  • Collaborates professionally in an ambulatory infusion and cancer center environment, working in close cooperation with nursing, medical, and technical staff
  • Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and the ability to assume multi-task duties and function under significant time pressures
  • Demonstrates familiarity with USP 797 and USP 800 regulatory safety and quality guidelines is preferred

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required within 6 months of employment
  • Strong baseline knowledge of sterile product preparation, including antineoplastic and hazardous compounding workflows
  • Prior experience working in a hospital pharmacy setting or a sterile cleanroom environment is preferred
  • Available for a full-time, Monday through Friday daytime schedule rotation
  • Flexibility to rotate coverage between Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and Melchiorre Cancer Center as needed
