Job summary

Fairview Health Services seeks a Pharmacy Technician III to support day-to-day dispensing, sterile compounding, and chemotherapy preparation in a complex healthcare environment, including satellite OR and ICU. The role requires collaboration with care providers and pharmacists to ensure safe, accurate medication delivery.

Under pharmacist supervision, you will process orders from the EMR, maintain IV hoods, coordinate medication delivery, and participate in quality initiatives.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of pharmacy technician experience in a complex healthcare environment.
  • Eligible to become registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the MN State Board of Pharmacy and eligible to become certified with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
  • Nationally certified or become certified within 18 months of employment (PTCB or ExCPT with NCCA accreditation).
  • Preferred: completion of ASHP-accredited technician training; 2 years of experience in a complex environment.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with care providers and pharmacists to ensure accurate, safe medication dispensing.
  • Receive orders from EMR, process manually or via the computer system, and dispense in accordance with regulations.
  • Maintain IV hoods/isolation areas and clean rooms per specifications.
  • Coordinate ordering and delivery of medications, supplies, and equipment.
  • Participate in regulatory, quality assurance, and process-improvement activities; train other technicians.
  • Other duties including data collection and updating patient education materials.

Job Overview

Under the direction of the Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician III is responsible for day-to-day comprehensive pharmacy technician services in a complex healthcare environment. This may include dose dispensing technology and sterile medication compounding, and chemotherapy medication compounding. The Pharmacy Technician III will work in advanced technical areas, such as satellite operating room and intensive care unit, as well as be efficient in tech check tech and code response practices. The Pharmacy Technician III will function as a subject matter expert in at least two advanced technical areas and can skillfully use interpersonal, customer service, problem solving and collaboration skills to support and influence operational objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with care providers and pharmacists to ensure that patient receives the needed medication accurately, safely, in accordance with all legal requirements and policies and in a professional and timely manner.
  • Under the direction of the pharmacist, receive prescription/orders from electronic medical record, process manually or using the appropriate computer system and protocols, prepare drug therapy and/or dispense medication in an accurate and timely manner in accordance with all legal, regulatory agency and Fairview requirements.
  • Maintain the IV hoods or isolators, clean room, ante room according to manufacturer’s specifications and regulatory requirements as applicable.
  • Coordinate ordering, delivery of medications, supplies and equipment to patients and clinical areas as requested.
  • Participate, coordinate or lead regulatory, quality assurance and process improvement activities and other projects as assigned.
  • Facilitate the training of pharmacy technicians.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned including but not limited to: data collection, reporting, process improvement and maintenance of patient education materials.
Required Qualifications
  • 1 year of pharmacy technician experience in a complex healthcare environment
  • Eligible to become registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the MN State Board of Pharmacy and eligible to become certified with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
  • Nationally certified or become certified within 18 months of employment. Certifying exams must have National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accreditation, with examples including, Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam and The Exam for Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited pharmacy technician training program
  • 2 years of pharmacy technician experience in a complex healthcare environment
