Job description

Under the supervision of the Pharmacist-in-Charge, the Pharmacy Technician supports the daily operations of the outpatient pharmacy and ensures safe, accurate, and patient-centered pharmaceutical care. This position works closely with providers, care teams, and other Lunera staff to support high-quality primary care services, optimize 340B program compliance, and enhance access for medically underserved populations.

Essential Functions:

Patient Care & Customer Service

• Provide exceptional customer service to patients dropping off or picking up prescriptions, ensuring a welcoming and patient-centered experience.
• Answer phone calls promptly and professionally, directing questions to the appropriate staff as needed.

Prescription Processing & Technical Support

• Accurately enter and process prescription orders within the pharmacy management system; consult with the pharmacist when clarification or clinical review is needed.
• Retrieve, count, label, and prepare medications to support pharmacist verification.
• Create and maintain accurate patient profiles, including demographics, allergies, insurance information, and medication histories.

Regulatory & Operational Compliance

• Assist pharmacists in accordance with federal, state, and local pharmacy regulations, Lunera policies, and applicable 340B program requirements.
• Follow all procedures related to operating a compliant 340B pharmacy, including correct patient identification, prescriber validation, accumulator accuracy, and documentation of eligible encounters.
• Support pharmacy record-keeping, audit readiness, and quality assurance activities.

Insurance & Billing Support

• Communicate with insurance carriers to secure payment, resolve claim rejections, and help patients understand coverage limitations-including Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, and sliding-fee-scale considerations.

Inventory Management

• Receive and verify pharmacy inventory; stock shelves, rotate stock, and ensure all regulatory documentation is complete and accurate.
• Order medications and supplies, maintain appropriate par levels, and assist with inventory tasks.
• Identify, remove, and properly dispose of expired medications according to Lunera policy and regulatory guidance.

Care Coordination & Communication

• Communicate with clinical providers under the guidance of the Pharmacist in Charge.
• Collaborate closely with pharmacists and other care team members to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate patient care.

Administrative & Financial Duties

• Operate the point-of-sale system and manage cash drawer transactions with accuracy and integrity.
• Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information in accordance with HIPAA and Lunera privacy policies.

Secondary Functions:

• Assist in onboarding and training new pharmacy employees.
• Perform back-office, administrative, or front-office duties as skills and qualifications permit.
• Travel to other Lunera sites to provide coverage or attend training sessions as needed.
• Participate in Lunera committees, meetings, and community outreach initiatives when requested.
• Attend continuing education, seminars, and professional development activities to maintain current skills and knowledge.
• Understand and support Lunera's Disaster Plan; maintain safety as a condition of employment.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current registration as a pharmacy technician with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy; must maintain active registration in good standing throughout employment.
• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT); must maintain certification throughout employment.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Bilingual English/Spanish skills
• Knowledge of medication brand/generic names.
• Strong understanding of medical terminology and pharmacy calculations.
• Knowledge of insurance plans including private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and sliding-fee-scale programs.
• Strong communication skills with diverse patient populations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and Lunera policies.
• Proficiency with computers, EMR/EHR systems, and pharmacy software.
• Ability to work on your feet for extended periods and perform well under pressure.
• Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two or more years of outpatient pharmacy technician experience.
• Experience working in a Federally Qualified Health Center.
• Direct experience supporting 340B program operations.
• Proficiency with Lunera's EMR, pharmacy systems, and Microsoft Office/Outlook.
