Children's of Alabama (Main Campus) is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support 24/7 pharmaceutical services in a busy hospital setting. You will assist with medication preparation, verification, and distribution under the supervision of a pharmacist.

The role emphasizes accuracy, adherence to policy, and use of Epic and Pyxis systems to ensure safe and effective patient care.

Qualifications

  • Certification as Pharmacy Technician (PTCB or NHA) is required.
  • AL Pharmacy Intern Extern acceptable for eligibility.
  • Associates Degree required.
  • Must work efficiently and accurately under pharmacist supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to patient needs for medications and support pharmacotherapy.
  • Perform compounding and preparation of medications for services.
  • Assist in unit-dosing, medication order verification, and dispensing activities.
  • Operate and utilize dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis) and Epic pharmacy modules.
  • Adhere to Alabama Board of Pharmacy standards and institutional policies.

In Pharmacy at Main Campus Children's of Alabama

Work schedule will be 7 On 7 Off on the Night shift, Monday - Sunday, 4pm-2am.

Summary

A Pharmacy Technician is responsible for responding to patient needs for medications and utilizing technical preparation skills to compound, manufacture; and assimilate the medications necessary for the operation of all pharmaceutical services at Children's Hospital of Alabama. A Pharmacy Technician must be able to work efficiently and accurately while following diversified departmental policies and procedures while under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. This practice will be governed by the standards of institutional hospital pharmacy as stated by the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy.

Capable of obtaining a level of competency necessary to complete the following COA formal training programs:

  • Aseptic Technique and USP <797> Training Programs
  • Calculations and Computations for oral and IV compounding
  • Safe Handling of Cytotoxic Drugs
  • Automated Dispensing Machines
  • Code/Trauma Response

Effective January 1, 2020, new hires must obtain certification by a national board accredited association within 18 months of hire. Employees hired before this date are grandfathered and remain in compliance.

Credentials with Equivalent Qualifications

Essential:

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician or AL Pharmacy Intern Extern
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician PTCB or Certified Pharmacy Technician NHA
Education with Equivalent Qualifications

Essential:

  • Associates Degree
Experience with Equivalent Qualifications

Nonessential:

  • 2 Years job experience as Staff Level with specialization in the field of Pharmacy

The Pharmacy Department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide excellent pharmaceutical care to Children’s of Alabama Patients. Services include, compounding of sterile and non-sterile medication, pharmacokinetics, medication order verification, OR preference bags, hazardous medication dispensing and compounding, clinical pharmacy services, unit-dosing of medication, automatic dispensing machines (Pyxis), investigational study pharmacy, medication delivery and more. The pharmacy operates out of a central pharmacy located in the Benjamin Russell building. Decentralized services are provided by clinical pharmacists on the units and several pharmacy satellites (main campus OR, Children’s South, hematology/oncology clinic, Investigational Pharmacy). The pharmacy utilizes Epic, Epic Willow Inventory, bar code scanning, vertical carousels, and kit management software.

Schedule: Monday-Sunday, 4pm-2am, Day-Evening Shift, 7-On 7-Off Schedule
