Job summary

Michigan Medicine is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to join a collaborative team of Pharmacists, Technicians, and other healthcare professionals in Ann Arbor. The role includes preparing sterile and non-sterile compounds, dispensing medications, and assisting with patient care across infusion sites.

  • Primary source verification is required.

Responsibilities

  • Complete order fill processing for internal/supply only orders and for prescription and enteral/supply orders.
  • Provide order double checks for non-High alert orders.
  • Participate in weekend, shift rotation and holiday staffing as assigned.
  • Provide sick and vacation coverage as required.
  • Assist with problem solving and process improvements within the pharmacy.
  • Assist with training and oversight of staff and learners (students, residents, interns).

Job Summary

As a Pharmacy Technician at Michigan Medicine, you will work within a highly collaborative team that includes Pharmacists, Technicians, and other medical professionals. We provide all of our Pharmacy Technicians with a comprehensive, hands‑on training to ensure you feel confident in performing your day-to-day responsibilities. Once training is complete, you will be able to prepare sterile IV products, restock automated dispensing cabinets, and dispense solid oral dosage forms for patients visiting the various infusion sites.

  • Gather prescription insurance coverage information
  • Perform prescription order entry and fulfillment
  • Perform basic metric conversions and calculations
  • Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounds
  • Greet patients and answer phones
  • Provide bedside delivery of discharge prescriptions
  • Assist with the resolution of medication access barriers
  • Collaborate with nursing, social work, providers, pharmacists, and others to optimize patient care
  • Assist with problem solving and process improvements within the pharmacy
  • Assist with the training and oversight of other staff and learners (pharmacy students, residents and interns)
  • Must exhibit good communication skills in dealing with patients and/or families, who may have compromised health or language barriers and with other members of the health care team. Be adaptable to diverse patient care environments
  • Exhibit strong attention to detail, accuracy and the ability to work independently
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor to facilitate safe and efficient patient care

  • Current licensure that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements. This includes: A temporary pharmacy technician license (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable) or a full pharmacy technician license upon hire, or a full pharmacy technician license before the temporary license expires.
  • One or more years of relevant pharmacy experience.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills.
  • This position requires primary source verification

Licensure & Certification

The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.

Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .

Work Schedule

Days (hours of operation between 7am-7pm, days of operation Monday-Saturday. Rotating schedules,holiday and on-call.

This is a pharmacy technician position. HomeMed is located at 2850 S. Industrial Hwy. Suite 50, Ann Arbor.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
