Job description

Outpatient Pharmacy Technician

Following a training period of approximately 4 to 6 weeks, the Outpatient Pharmacy Technician should be able to decipher and enter orders on the computer, determine eligibility and enroll Meds to Beds patients, adjudicate claims, fill orders, answer phones and doors, capture payment, file, and stock the department. Technicians will also facilitate the delivery of discharge prescriptions to patients as part of the Meds to Beds program and package and prepare prescriptions for shipping to the consumer. The position requires professional judgment and problem‑solving skills.


Responsibilities


  • Fill and prepare prescriptions for final verification by pharmacist. Gather insurance information and coordinate with doctor's offices, nurses, and case workers to ensure medication needs are met.

  • Enter prescriptions into the computer accurately and timely from in‑person, fax, electronic, and telephone sources.

  • Pull medications, order medications, and restock the department; conduct frequent inventory counts and make purchasing decisions based on par levels; use appropriate software for purchases; maintain compliance with 340B policies.

  • Gather, review, and interpret EMR data to determine patient eligibility for Meds to Beds enrollment and maintain ongoing eligibility.

  • Deliver completed and pharmacist‑checked prescriptions to patients' bedsides, to eligible patients by mail, and to patients at pickup; collect co‑payment via the cash register and point‑of‑sale software.

  • Maintain prescription and OTC area, including ordering, stocking, outdating, and cleanliness.

  • Perform additional duties as requested by supervising pharmacist or pharmacy manager.


Other Duties and Responsibilities


  • Create labels using the computer accurately and timely.

  • Answer questions regarding co‑payment and prescription costs.

  • Process prior authorizations promptly.

  • Assist patients without prescription insurance by offering cash pricing, financial assistance, or accounts receivable options.

  • Receive drug deliveries from wholesaler and order additional supplies using the appropriate system.

  • Conduct accurate inventory counts and document controlled substance discharges.

  • Remove and return recalled drugs when appropriate.

  • Assist retail customers at outpatient windows with drop/pick‑up functions.


Certifications and Licensure


  • PHARM TECH: Pharmacy Technician Licensure (full, temporary, or limited license required).


Required Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

Exposure to stressful public contact situations, trauma, grief, and death; ability to wear personal protective equipment; ability to move freely through the facility; ability to sit/stand/walk for long periods and perform postural changes; exposure to bloodborne pathogens with required testing; ability to handle multiple tasks and maintain regular attendance; light physical demand with occasional lifting up to 20 lbs.
