Job Summary: The Pharmacy student is under the general supervision of a Clinical Pharmacist while working. He/she is under the specific supervision of the Pharmacy Supervisors and Clinical Pharmacist Supervisors for the technical functions in the operation of the Department of Pharmacy. The primary responsibility is to prepare and distribute medications and IV solutions in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop familiarity with medications: generic and trade names, methods of administration, usual dosages, and conversion between metric and apothecary systems. Distribute medications using automated dispensing cabinetry, monitor discharge and transfer lists, and handle bins appropriately. Deliver medications with proper labels.
  • Repackage tablets, capsules, and liquids, operate re-packaging machinery, and assign expiration dates per policy. Handle controlled substances and investigational drugs. Prepare topical and irrigation solutions.
  • Restock floor stock and automated dispensing cabinetry. Check for expired medications and maintain stock levels in the pharmacy and satellite units.
  • Prepare and assemble drugs and solutions for compounding, including aseptic preparation of parenteral admixtures in laminar flow hoods.
  • Refill OR kits, prepare related items using aseptic technique, and maintain OR pharmacy stock. Complete all related documentation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Vocational or Technical training in Pharmacy, with completed 2nd year in an accredited Pharmacy degree program.
  • Registration as a Pharmacy Student Intern.
  • 0-1 years related work experience.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited pharmacy degree program and have completed year 2.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to navigate web-based applications.

Competencies:

  • Effective written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of standard pharmacy practices and policies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and demonstrate customer service skills.

Physical Nature of the Job: Light work, exerting up to 20 pounds frequently, with periods of standing and mobility within the hospital campus.
