Job Summary: The Pharmacy student is under the general supervision of a Clinical Pharmacist while working. He/she is under the specific supervision of the Pharmacy Supervisors and Clinical Pharmacist Supervisors for the technical functions in the operation of the Department of Pharmacy. The primary responsibility in accordance with established policies and procedures is to prepare and distribute medications and IV solutions.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Develops familiarity with medications: generic and trade names, methods of administration, usual dosages, usual dosage schedules, and conversion between metric and apothecary systems. Distributes automated dispensing cabinetry with appropriate dosage forms and monitors discharge and transfer lists. Delivers medications with appropriate labels.
  • Repackages tablets, capsules, and liquid medication, operates re-packaging machines, and assigns expiration dates as per policy. Handles and distributes controlled substances and investigational drugs. Prepares topical and irrigation solutions.
  • Restocks floor stock/automated dispensing cabinetry. Checks for expired medications in the pharmacy and in the automated dispensing cabinetry. Maintains stock levels in the unit dose area and satellites.
  • Prepares and initiates worklists, labels, and assembles drugs and solutions to be compounded. Demonstrates aseptic technique in compounding of parenteral admixtures in laminar flow hood.
  • Refills OR kits. Prepares OR-related items, cardioplegia solutions, and syringes using aseptic techniques. Maintains stock in the OR pharmacy and completes all related documentation.
Required Qualifications:
  • Vocational or Technical training in Pharmacy, with completion of 2nd year in an accredited Pharmacy degree program.
  • Registration as a Pharmacy Student Intern.
  • 0-1 years of related work experience.
  • Enrolled in an accredited pharmacy degree program, having completed year 2.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to navigate web-based applications.

  • Knowledge: Demonstrates understanding of standard pharmacy concepts, practices, procedures, and policies.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Light work involving exerting up to 20 pounds of force. Some sedentary work, with periods of standing and movement around the hospital campus.
