Job summary

Insight Global seeks an experienced Pharmacy Operations Manager to oversee hospital pharmacy daily operations and ensure high-quality pharmaceutical care. You will mentor clinical pharmacists, supervise staff, manage inventory, and support the Pharmacy Director in policy development and budget management.

Responsibilities include coordinating workflow, ensuring USP standards, driving efficiency, and participating in quality initiatives and disaster response planning.

Qualifications

• B.S. or Pharm D. from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy.
• 5+ year’s hospital pharmacy experience (leadership included).
• Active Pharmacist license in good standing with the State Board of Pharmacy.
• Other applicable state requirements – e.g. sterile compounding.
• BLS certification.
• Experience with Microsoft Office and Electronic Medical Records systems.
• 1 year as a pharmacy operations specialist.
• Hospital Pharmacy Management experience.
• ALS/ACLS certification.

Job Description

The pharmacy operations manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the pharmacy department and providing pharmaceutical care to patients as a staff pharmacist as needed. This includes inventory management, staff oversight, policy and procedure development, and education within the pharmacy. In addition, the operations manager should provide support, mentoring, and oversight of the activities of the clinical pharmacists and supportive personnel on staff. The operations manager shall also assist in managing the pharmacy when the Pharmacy Director is unavailable.

Essential Functions:

1. Function in accordance with standard written policy & procedures, guidelines, and state and federal regulations

2. Communicate with other pharmacy team members, caregivers, providers, and ancillary departments in an effective and positive manner. Demonstrate emotional control and intelligence in managing work relationships. Attend and actively participate in team huddles and meetings. Answer phones in a professional and pleasant manner.

3. Assist the Director of Pharmacy to assure all legal, regulatory, and accrediting requirements are maintained at the best demonstrated practice and participates in quality and regulatory reviews and audits.

4. Arrange/conduct pharmacy orientation for new hires; assist in the development and implementation of a training and competency program for all staff and maintain records of those completed competencies.

5. Supervise and maintain schedules for pharmacists and supportive personnel, including managing staffing shortages and overtime.

6. Coordinate the workflow and daily activities of pharmacy staff.

7. Oversee preparation and delivery of medication throughout the hospital.

8. In conjunction with pharmacy director and clinical manager, is responsible for staff performance evaluations.

9. Assist pharmacy director in the development and review of pharmacy policies and procedures.

10. In conjunction with pharmacy director and buyer, oversee inventory optimization and waste reduction efforts.

11. Participate in analysis and reporting of adverse drug reactions, medication errors and pharmacy quality initiatives, and mentors others in their roles in these programs.

12. Participate in hospital committee meetings necessary to enhance practice and patient care.

13. Train and participate with Disaster Team drills and real-event response as assigned.

14. Ensure standards and training for product preparation is in compliance with USP 795/797/800 non-sterile and sterile preparation standards, including review of master formulation records, standard operating procedures and policies.

15. Work with the Pharmacy Director to identify and develop processes to meet or exceed all controlled substance diversion prevention and monitoring standards.

16. Assure adequate control and documentation of controlled substances; has Power of Attorney to order Schedule II drugs.

17. Assist the director with the pharmacy budget through identification of cost savings initiatives, inventory optimization/control, and strategic planning for capital needs.

18. Must serve as preceptor for pharmacy students and/or residents.

19. Maintain professional competency sufficient to meet current and future needs of the facility.

20. Interpret orders and transcribe or verify them accurately and efficiently into the pharmacy computer system.

21. Accurately compound and dispense pharmaceuticals.

22. Monitor drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies and appropriateness of drug and dose.

23. Provide accurate and timely medication information to healthcare staff and patients.

24. Document all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely.

25. Sustain the hospital formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic interchanges and promote rational drug therapy selection.

26. Supervise and assist pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other support staff effectively.

27. Prioritize work and lead others to comply with facility medication turn-around time policy and procedure and identify areas for improved efficiency.
