Overview

Performs technical duties and limited professional duties, under the supervision of attending pharmacist, involving compounding and dispensing medications as prescribed by physicians or other qualified prescribers. The pharmacy intern will practice only within the scope of a valid intern classification from the state board of pharmacy and will assist with pharmacy duties while being responsible for learning the systems and the ability to manage them properly by the time the pharmacy intern becomes a licensed pharmacist.

Responsibilities

1. The pharmacy intern will assist with and be responsible for learning assigned aspects of pharmacy.
2. Responsible for working in the outpatient pharmacy and transitions of care responsibilities include outpatient pharmacy oversight of automation and technology, transitions of care, meds to beds program, retail/transitions medication safety/quality, customer service, operations, and pharmacy practice under the supervision of a pharmacist.
3. Procedures for merchandise and inventory control, and financial management including participation in economical use of supplies, products and resources.
4. Monitoring of patient medication therapy.
5. Responsible for working in the outpatient pharmacy and transitions of care responsibilities include outpatient pharmacy oversight of automation and technology, transitions of care, meds to beds program, retail/transitions medication safety/quality, customer service, operations, and pharmacy practice under the supervision of a pharmacist.
6. Provide clinical drug information to meet the needs of the physician, nurse and patient with the approval of the pharmacist.
7. Interpretation of medication orders, scheduling medications, maintaining profiles, and proper selection and control of medication under the supervision of a pharmacist.
8. Participates in hospital performance improvement activities.
9. Supporting and following hospital policies and procedures, performing only within the legal scope of practice, and following professional standards.
10. Performing special projects and other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Must have necessary experience and educational requirements to hold a valid intern classification from the State Board of Pharmacy. Will have frequent contact with physicians, nurses, patients and other professional personnel as well as the public. Must follow hospital behavioral standards and learn to demonstrate poise and the ability to communicate professional knowledge. Ability to meet facility behavioral standards, competency expectations and work well with a team. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak and comprehend English.
