Job summary

MLK Community Healthcare in Los Angeles is seeking a pharmacy intern enrolled in an ACPE-accredited program to join our hospital pharmacy team. Under pharmacist supervision you will support medication preparation, dispensing, and patient care activities.

You will help ensure medication availability, maintain inventory, perform reconciliations, and contribute to quality improvement projects while building professional relationships with staff and patients across departments.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

This position reports to the Manager, Pharmacy Operations. The pharmacy intern must be enrolled in a Pharmacy degree from an accredited Pharmacy School and be licensed as a pharmacy intern in the State they practice. Serve as an active member of the pharmacy team. Assist with ensuring the availability and delivery of medications to authorized locations/personnel, maintain in-date inventory of medications, prepare and repackage medications accurately, record and charge supplies/medications to the correct patient/location. . Pharmacy interns may assist with clinical monitoring, medication reconciliation, and process improvement projects under the supervision of a pharmacist. Build and enhance professional relationships with all departments, staff, and patients. Communicate effectively to promote clinical initiatives, provide patient care and education, and promote pharmacy initiatives. The pharmacy intern will provide pharmaceutical care for patients of all ages: from infancy through geriatric. Maintain a professional presence throughout the hospital. Assure pharmacy services and activities are carried out to meet goals and standards of the hospital.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Ensures safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, protocols, and national guidelines
  2. Monitors drug therapy regimens for allergies, contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, drug-laboratory test interactions, adverse drug reactions, appropriateness of drug and dose, and therapeutic duplications
  3. Assist pharmacists with the provision of clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners. Suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to medical staff as needed
  4. Provides accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to the professional staff
  5. Ensures productive, collaborative relationships with staff members and within the community
  6. Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department under the instruction of a pharmacist.
  7. Prepares reports on pharmaceutical care and pharmacoeconomic activities including financial impact under the instruction of a pharmacist
  8. Attends and participates in departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement programs
    1. Maintains all required training and education per department requirements (e.g. HealthStream, Continuing Education)
  9. Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control. Complies with all applicable state, local and federal regulations
  10. Maintains safety-integrity-professionalism of pharmacy at all times
  11. Perform special projects as requested
  12. Wears hospital badge identification while on duty.
  13. Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean. Is conscientious in regard to personal hygiene.
  14. Treats patients and families with respect and dignity. Assures confidentiality of patient records.
  15. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  16. Assists in the resolution of problems or concerns while being a supportive team member.
  17. Consistently strives to promote great customer service in all aspects of the job.
  18. Answers phones timely
  19. Check in and stock orders - Reorder as required
  20. Comply with hospital policies
  21. Credit returned meds
  22. Deliver controlled substances
  23. Deliver Meds/Rounds on hourly or as needed basis
  24. Enter charges for manual billing needs
  25. Fill meds to be checked by Staff Pharmacists
  26. Inspect medication storage locations
  27. Inventory and refill Floor Stock, Automated Dispensing Cabinets, and Emergency Trays
  28. Maintain organized/accurate/sufficient inventory
  29. Collect medication histories
  30. Other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

  • Actively enrolled in a school of Pharmacy accredited by ACPE.

B. Qualifications/Experience

  • Previous pharmacy intern or technician experience or previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Current CA Pharmacy Intern License.
  • Maintains active membership in American Society of Health-System Pharmacists or other Pharmacy-related State or National organization preferred.
