Job summary

Winona Health in Winona, MN is seeking a Pharmacy Intern to assist under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. You will process, prepare and dispense medications for inpatient, outpatient and retail orders, following routine procedures and complying with applicable laws and policies.

The role requires active enrollment in an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program, state registration as a Pharmacy Intern, and solid computer skills.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Actively enrolled and in good standing at an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy, or a graduate working toward licensure.
• Registered as a Pharmacy Intern and in good standing with the state of Minnesota.
• Basic Computer Skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, Patient Information Database (Cerner and PioneerRx).
• Ability to handle medications that have a high potential for abuse.
• Organized, efficient, ambitious, able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Completes Winona Health orientation and educational requirements, maintains competency and practices and contributes to Winona Health's Mission, Vision, and Values.
• Assists pharmacists in providing safe, effective and efficient pharmaceutical care.
• Processes, prepares and dispenses medications for inpatient and outpatient orders. This would include preparing and dispensing medications that are potentially critical and/or high expense.
• Prepares medications accurately and performs timely distribution to patient care areas.
• Inpatient and outpatient pharmacy technician duties.
• Performs multiple computer functions, facilitates accurate charging/crediting of medications via Cerner and PioneerRx programming.
• Adheres strictly to all established controlled substance protocols, policies and procedures. This would include federal and state regulations and hospital policies and procedures.
• Takes on and maintains responsibilities for special projects assigned by Pharmacists and/or Manager of Pharmacy Services.
• Assists the pharmacists and others as needed for the provision of customer care, both internal and external.
• Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.
• Works with caregivers from other departments as needed to strengthen pharmacy services.
• Good organization and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize critical work appropriately and assure timely delivery of product to the patient care areas.
• Other duties as assigned, in accordance with pharmacy intern licensure requirements and supervision standards and as permitted under law and the MN Board of Pharmacy.

Pharmacy Intern

0.00 FTE, casual on-call
Hours would be scheduled between 6:30 am and 10 pm
Occasional weekends and holidays
*Starting pay between $18.45 and $23.06

Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Manager of Pharmacy Services, the pharmacy intern functions under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Follows routine pharmacy procedures and adheres to law pertaining to the practice of pharmacy. Responsible for the processing, preparation and dispensing of inpatient, outpatient and retail medications and other technician functions. Uses clinical knowledge to preform professional activities as needed under the supervision of a pharmacist.

A majority of the time is spent in the main central pharmacy department or clinic pharmacy. In addition, routine visits to patient care areas and other departments within the hospital and clinic is required for the delivery of individually prepared patient medications as well as for the maintenance of stock medications.
