Job summary

The Yale New Haven Health system is seeking a Pharmacy Intern to support daily pharmacy operations under licensed pharmacists. You will assist with medication preparation, dispensing and distribution, and participate in patient education.

This role emphasizes accuracy, confidentiality, and adherence to HIPAA, with opportunities to engage in immunization initiatives and quality improvement activities within the Pharmacy Department.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled or plan to enroll in an accredited College of Pharmacy program or pre‑pharmacy program.
  • Eligible to register as a Pharmacy Intern or pharmacy technician in CT/RI as outlined by the state boards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with medication preparation, dispensing and distribution under supervision.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients and healthcare team members.
  • Perform necessary calculations and drug product manipulations, dilution, or compounding.
  • Support inventory management including receiving, restocking, expiration monitoring, and controlled substances handling.
  • Assist with immunization initiatives if certified to immunize.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and timely communication of medication‑related information.
  • Participate in medication safety initiatives and quality improvement efforts.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.

Pharmacy interns are enrolled in a pharmacy degree program at an accredited school of pharmacy and participate in the delivery of pharmacy services under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The pharmacy intern position will prepare individuals for their role as a future pharmacist. Interns are invited and encouraged to participate in educational activities within the Pharmacy Department including those associated with the pharmacy residency program. The intern may complete additional pharmacy projects in collaboration with pharmacy leadership and/or pharmacy residents.

Responsibilities
  • Consistently demonstrate HRO behaviors

  • Assist with medication preparation, dispensing, and distribution in accordance with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies
  • Perform necessary calculations and drug product manipulations, dilution, or compounding
  • Support inventory management activities, including receiving, restocking, expiration monitoring, and controlled substance handling
  • Support immunization initiatives if certified to immunize
  • Support optimal transitions of care (e.g., meds to beds, meds in hands)
  • Ensure accurate documentation and timely communication of medication‑related information
  • Efficiently collect best possible medication histories and provide patient education as needed
  • Participate in medication safety initiatives and quality improvement efforts as assigned
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, or projects as assigned
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and accreditation standards (e.g., state board of pharmacy, USP, Joint Commission)
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and data security in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Clearly communicate and escalating concerns to the supervising pharmacist, manager and/or director of pharmacy as appropriate and in a timely manner
  • Perform relevant and pertinent duties as directed by departmental pharmacy leadership to support the needs of the department
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma required and must be currently enrolled or plan to enroll in an accredited College of Pharmacy program or pre‑pharmacy program.

Experience

Pharmacy or healthcare‑related experience preferred but not required.

Licensure

Must be eligible to register as a Pharmacy Intern or pharmacy technician in the state of employment as outlined by the Dept. of Consumer Protection (CT) or Dept. of Health (RI).

Special Skills

Proficiency in mathematical calculations; accuracy; problem solving; attention to detail; knowledge of computer applications including word processing and spreadsheets; ability to learn quickly in a fast‑paced environment; ability to learn or perform pharmaceutical compounding, repackaging and labeling including manipulation of raw drug products using appropriate technique; ability to work with computer and technology equipment including the ability to perform basic troubleshooting functions; must be able to prioritize competing demands, work independently, and show flexibility and teamwork; demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Demand

Must be available to work rotating shifts and weekends. Must be flexible with scheduling, working evening, holiday, and weekend shifts as needs demand. Employee is considered essential personnel and is expected to work during inclement weather (e.g., blizzards, hurricanes). Employees are required to walk, sit, stand, and crouch during daily tasks. The employee must regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The work environment noise level is moderate.
