Responsibilities

  • Own day-to-day operation and workflow of pharmacy automated packaging systems.
  • Train and supervise staff on operation and maintenance of the systems.
  • Learn, develop, and maintain knowledge of each machine’s functions and maintenance needs.
  • Oversee and operate packaging systems following procedures and policies.
  • Prepare, stage, and load medications, labels, and packaging materials for production.
  • Monitor production runs for accuracy, performance, and timely completion.
  • Verify medication identity, lot numbers, expiration dates, and labeling details.
  • Inspect completed packages for accuracy and seal integrity.
  • Maintain machine readiness by monitoring supplies and equipment condition.
  • Identify issues and escalate as needed; assist in troubleshooting with service teams.
  • Maintain production logs and packaging documentation.
  • Support workflow improvements to enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Collaborate with pharmacists, technicians, and operations to meet goals.

Job description

NaphCare is hiring a Pharmacy Automation Specialist to join our pharmacy team at our Corporate Headquarters located in Birmingham, AL.

The Pharmacy Automation Specialist is responsible for taking ownership of the day-to-day operation, management, and continuous learning associated with the automated pharmacy packaging systems within a high-volume pharmacy environment. This position serves as the primary employee responsible for understanding machine workflow, maintaining operational readiness, training, supporting efficient production, monitoring packaging quality, and ensuring the system is operated safely, accurately, and effectively.

This role requires a dependable, detail-oriented individual who is comfortable learning specialized equipment, developing strong working knowledge of machine processes, and serving as a key resource for daily packaging operations. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, accountability, strong adherence to procedures, and a commitment to quality, safety, cleanliness, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Take primary ownership of the day-to-day operation and workflow of the pharmacy automated packaging systems
  • Train and supervise departmental personnel on the operation and maintenance of the pharmacy automated packaging systems
  • Learn, develop, and maintain strong working knowledge of each machine’s functions, workflow, routine maintenance requirements, and operational best practices
  • Supervise the operation of the pharmacy automated packaging systems in accordance with manufacturer instructions, pharmacy policies, and established workflow procedures
  • Prepare, stage, and load medications, cassette/canisters, labels, packaging materials, and other consumables necessary for production
  • Monitor production runs to ensure packaging accuracy, machine performance, and timely completion of assigned workload
  • Verify medication identity, lot numbers, expiration dates, labels, and packaging information prior to and during production activities
  • Inspect completed packages for accuracy, seal integrity, print quality, and overall product acceptability
  • Oversee and if necessary perform routine daily and weekly operator-level cleaning, upkeep, and maintenance procedures
  • Oversee and maintain machine readiness by monitoring supplies, consumables, and general equipment condition
  • Identify production issues, equipment irregularities, jams, or exceptions and take appropriate action within role expectations, including timely escalation when needed
  • Troubleshoot basic operational issues and coordinate escalation for issues requiring service or higher-level technical support, including being on call for support while not onsite
  • Maintain accurate production logs, maintenance records, packaging documentation, and other operational records as required
  • Support process consistency and recommend workflow improvements that enhance efficiency, reliability, and quality
  • Work collaboratively with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, supervisors, and operations personnel to meet productivity, turnaround time, and quality goals
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and inspection-ready work area at all times
  • Comply with all applicable pharmacy laws, regulations, company policies, safety standards, and quality assurance requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support pharmacy operations
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current pharmacy technician registration, license, or certification as required by applicable state law
  • Ability to learn and become proficient in specialized pharmacy automation equipment
  • Ability to establish and follow written procedures, work instructions, and quality standards
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Basic computer skills and ability to complete documentation accurately
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Reliable attendance, punctuality, and strong sense of accountability
Preferred
  • Prior pharmacy technician experience
  • PTCB or NHA technician certification designation (CPhT or ExCPT)
  • Prior experience with pharmacy automation, packaging systems, or production equipment
  • Experience in long-term care, institutional, correctional, or high-volume pharmacy operations
  • Experience with blister card, unit-dose, or adherence packaging workflows
  • Experience serving as a primary user or lead operator for equipment or workflow processes
