Job summary

WH Wheeling Hospital Inc. is seeking a licensed Pharmacist to join the hospital's Pharmacy team. You will dispense medications, provide clinical consultation to physicians and nurses, and participate in quality assurance activities.

You’ll engage with vendors and sales reps and help maintain IV admixture and safety checks across floors. The role emphasizes accurate prescription review, patient-centered care, and adherence to state and federal pharmacy laws.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a current Pharmacist license for the state(s) where services are provided.
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Dispense drugs and pharmaceutical preparations as ordered by physicians.
  • Provide pharmaceutical consultation to doctors and nurses.
  • Question prescriptions when necessary to ensure accuracy.
  • Assist Pharmacy manager with drug purchasing from vendors.
  • Interact with pharmaceutical reps as needed.
  • Conduct drug checks and inspections on hospital floors.
  • Assist with IV admixture program by reviewing orders for accuracy.
  • May attend hospital pharmacy meetings as assigned.
  • Support the Pharmacy Quality Assurance program and floor inspection reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE

1. Must possess current license as required by state board where services will be provided:
MD: Valid Pharmacist license through the Maryland Board of Pharmacy

OH: Valid Pharmacist license through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy
PA: Valid Pharmacist license through the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy
WV: Valid Pharmacist license through the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

1. Experience in Hospital Pharmacy through internship or as registered Pharmacist.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Dispenses drugs, chemicals and other pharmaceutical preparations as ordered by physicians.

2. Constantly available for pharmaceutical consultation with doctors or nurses.

3. Takes initiative in questioning a prescription if necessary.

4. Assists manager of Pharmacy in purchasing of drugs from vendors.

5. Talks with sales representatives of various pharmaceutical companies when need dictates.

6. Makes drug checks and inspections on various floors as required.

7. Assists with IV admixture program by checking orders for completeness, accuracy, compatibilities and other technical advice.

8. May be delegated to attend some pharmacy involved hospital meetings.

9. Assists the manager with the Pharmacy Quality Assurance program.

10. Assists the manager with the Pharmacy floor inspection reports.

For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements

1. Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of growth and development.

2. Understanding of the patient’s needs and scope of treatment.

3. Understanding of the dynamics for each patient incorporating biophysical, bio-psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, spiritual, cultural, ethical, and discharge planning needs.

4. Knowledge of pain management to facilitate patient comfort through a proactive pain control plan.

5. Knowledge of the total care of patients, whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment, focusing on the control of pain and other symptoms.

6. Must be familiar with professional and commercial phases of Hospital Pharmacy and also with State and Federal laws governing Pharmacy.

7. Computer experience helpful.

8. Demonstrates competency as appropriate in patient care assessment for each patient population area served: Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.
