Job Duties

The Division of Population Health Data (DPHD) is responsible for analytic and outreach services within the Office of Family Health Services (OFHS), including epidemiological activities regarding the collection, monitoring, analysis and interpretation of data, and program evaluation regarding programmatic data-informed decision-making and needs assessment activities. The DPHD seeks a qualified candidate to serve as the Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) Nurse Coordinator.

The position supports the delivery of the SMM Surveillance and Review Program by serving as the clinical and operational leader for this statewide initiative. As the primary liaison between VDH and hospital partners, this position is responsible for providing technical assistance to 40+ birthing facilities implementing SMM advisory boards and case review processes, developing standardized protocols and procedures that hospitals will use to identify and review severe maternal morbidity cases, and ensuring consistent program implementation across all participating facilities.

This position will supervise the SMM epidemiologist on surveillance and evaluation activities, coordinate with hospital quality improvement teams, engage community-based organizations, and represent VDH in multi-stakeholder workgroups and initiatives. This position will work under the supervision of the Community Health Improvement Epidemiology Program Manager. This position exercises line supervision over multiple registered nurses by training, scheduling, formally evaluating performance and issuing discipline. Also performs direct nursing service by independently providing professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools. Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability to effectively supervise staff in the areas of public health nursing and population health
  • Knowledge of grants, case management, ambulatory clinic services, and agencies/programs that support the underserved and underinsured populations
  • Knowledge of public and community health principles, and of nursing and health care programs
  • Knowledge of nursing theories related to improving the health of the community
  • Working knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite

Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state. If a new graduate, must obtain RN license within 90 days of the date of hire or subject to termination per the regulations governing the practice of nursing. Requires BLS certification. Requires adherence to all safety policies including a review of immunizations, driver safety policies, and all other state policies.

Additional Considerations
  • Training/ experience in public health or maternal and child health
  • Experience w/ database management systems, especially those for tracking and monitoring disease and health conditions
