Job summary

The Mount Rogers Health District of the Virginia Department of Health is seeking a Public Health Nurse to deliver essential clinical services to patients of all ages and to support multiple programs including family planning, STD management, Hepatitis C treatment, Every Woman’s Life screenings, and immunizations.

The nurse may provide home visitation and participates in mobile unit operations, promoting equitable, patient-centered public health services within the district.

Qualifications

  • Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
  • Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
  • Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
  • Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
  • May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
  • Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR

Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts.

The Mount Rogers Health District is looking for a Public Health Nurse. In this role, the Public Health Nurse will deliver essential clinical services to patients of all ages. The position supports a wide range of programs, including but not limited to family planning, sexually transmitted disease management, Hepatitis C treatment, Every Woman’s Life screenings, immunization services, and mobile unit operations. In addition, the nurse will occasionally provide home visitation services. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to advance equitable, patient centered public health services.

Minimum Qualifications

Additional Considerations
  • Additional study in health promotion/or public health is preferred
  • Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
