Job summary

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension seeks an accomplished scientist to establish and grow the PFAS analytical program, directing a state-of-the-art laboratory in Orono. Qualifications

• Doctorate degree in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Chemistry, Soil Science, Environmental Science, or closely related field by date of hire.
• Approximately 5 years of PFAS analysis or related work.
• Experience with LC-MS/MS analysis, data interpretation, troubleshooting, instrument maintenance, and vendor coordination.
• Experience managing annual laboratory budgets, recharge operations, procurement, service contracts and financial reporting.
• Documented record of applied scientific research published in peer-reviewed journals or popular press.
• Experience supervising technical staff, research staff, students, postdocs or lab analysts.
• Experience writing and maintaining SOPs.
• Experience analyzing PFAS or trace organics in environmental/agricultural matrices.
• Knowledge of current PFAS analytical methods and trends.
• Experience managing finances of a fee-for-service lab and annual budget creation.
• Computer and educational technology skills including analytical database systems.

Responsibilities

• Establish and grow UMaine PFAS analytical program.
• Direct a state-of-the-art analytical laboratory and associated budgets.
• Collaborate with agricultural producers, researchers, and policymakers.
• Translate environmental science into practical solutions for Maine's food systems.
• Supervise and train technical staff, researchers, and students.
• Develop and maintain SOPs and QA/QC procedures.
• Communicate results clearly to stakeholders and partners.
• Seek and build partnerships with agencies and organizations.
