Job summary

Halifax Area School District is seeking a Full-time Personal Care Assistant at Halifax Elementary School to support one student with behavioral, medical, or physical needs, under the HESPA contract. This role is not responsible for teaching direction or evaluation and requires regular attendance.

The position involves assisting with daily living activities, safety compliance, data collection, and participation in field trips and drills, with an hourly wage and benefits per contract.

Qualifications

• Training in Safe Crisis Intervention preferred.
• CPR/First Aid preferred.
• Experience working with children with special needs preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Assists student with special needs in all aspects of classroom activities.
• Assist student with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities.
• Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
• Assist with all aspects of toileting, which may include transfers to and from the toilet, changing diapers or pull-ups.
• Assist student on and off the bus.
• Facilitate personal care services as needed to assist student with daily living activities needed for comfort and well-being as indicated on student's Individual Education Program.
• Assist student with general hygiene as necessary.
• Collect daily data and document progress notes in a prescribed format for each session with student.
• Follow and reinforce the student's behaviour plan as instructed by the student's Individual Education Program.
• Accompany the student and assist the teacher during emergency drills.
• Assist student on school approved field trips

Position Purpose

This position is not responsible for the design, direction or evaluation of the teaching/learning process. Regular attendance is required to fulfill the duties of this position.
