Responsibilities include monitoring activities, crisis intervention, intake processing, census submissions, and collaboration with daytime staff.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or HSE; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 1–2 years’ experience with adolescents using PYD principles.
  • Experience with LGBTQ+, homelessness, mental health, and substance use.
  • Knowledge of social service systems for youth and young adults.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor participant activities and provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Ensure Night Staff Policy and Procedures are followed.
  • Complete intake documents for overnight services.
  • Submit an overnight census and shift reports via email.
  • Assist participants with basic needs: shower, laundry, food.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in shower/laundry areas.
  • Coordinate with daytime staff during and after crises.
  • Attend trainings, meetings, and other assigned duties.

Position: Permanent Per Diem- Overnight Youth Counselor - Bronx 24-hour Drop-in CenterSupervisor: Supervisor of Runaway and Homeless Youth ServicesOverview: The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 11,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition into adulthood.The Permanent Per Diem - Youth Counselor will support the Runaway and Homeless Youth program by providing guidance and provision to homeless and unstably housed youth in order ensure that the basic needs (food, clothing, resting, hygiene) of young people are met, while ensuring their safety during the overnight.Responsibilities:Monitor participant activities and provide crisis intervention as needed.Ensure that Night Staff Policy and Procedures are followed.Complete and submit Face Sheet for each participant as they enter for overnight services.Complete intake papSubmit an overnight census at the end of the shift.Be flexible and/or available for holiday shift coverage when needed.Implement positive youth development focused activities for participants as needed.Assist participants in accessing basic needs: shower, laundry, resting space, food.Ensure that participant items are properly and securely put away during the overnight to avoid theft and fire hazards.Ensure the cleanliness of the shower/laundry areas after every use.Wash/dry and properly store towels.Restock hygiene products and crisis clothing as needed.Document all incidents and interventions with participants and building security in shift report and via email.Communicate appropriately with daytime staff and program management during and following crisis situations.Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops, and outside events.Other responsibilities and functions as assigned by the supervisor.Qualifications:A minimum of a high school diploma or HSE; Bachelors preferredMinimum of one to two years’ experience with adolescents utilizing positive youth development principlesExperience working with diverse at-risk populations such as LGBTQ+, homelessness, mental health, and substance useKnowledge of social service systems and community resources as they relate to the youth/young adult populationDemonstrate an understanding of and practice the principles of positive youth/young adult developmentUnderstanding of adolescent and young adult development, assessment, counseling and/or crisis managementAbility to engage people from strength based, trauma-informed person-centered philosophyAbility to provide crisis intervention when necessaryExcellent oral and written communication skills
