Job summary

The Door in Bronx, NY is seeking a Per Diem Overnight Youth Counselor to support the Runaway and Homeless Youth program. Responsibilities include crisis intervention, intake processing, and ensuring participant safety overnight.

You will help meet basic needs, document incidents, and coordinate with daytime staff. The role requires a high school diploma (bachelor’s preferred) and experience with at‑risk youth; multilingual candidates are encouraged.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
• 1–2 years experience with adolescents using positive youth development.
• Experience with LGBTQ+, homelessness, mental health and substance use populations.
• Knowledge of social service systems and community resources for youth/young adults.
• Understand and apply trauma-informed, strength-based approaches.
• Ability to provide crisis intervention when needed.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Monitor participant activities and provide crisis intervention.
• Ensure Night Staff Policy and Procedures are followed.
• Complete Face Sheet for overnight entry.
• Complete intake paperwork for new participants.
• Submit an overnight census at shift end.
• Be flexible for holiday shift coverage when needed.
• Implement positive youth development activities as needed.
• Assist participants in accessing basic needs (shower, laundry, food).
• Ensure participant items are stored securely to prevent theft and hazards.
• Maintain cleanliness of shower/laundry areas after each use.
• Wash/dry and store towels properly.
• Restock hygiene products and crisis clothing as needed.
• Document incidents and interventions with participants and security in shift reports and email.
• Communicate with daytime staff after crisis situations.
• Attend meetings, trainings, workshops, and events as required.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
