Job summary

Job Summary

Performs level II ultrasounds and assists in guiding for procedures related to them and to the scope of maternal fetal medicine (amniocentesis, CVS, biophysical profiles, dopplers, first trimester screening).

Essential Functions

• Receives and reviews requests for level II scans on patients.
• Explains exam to the patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs.
• Reviews exam and collaborates with MFM specialist in a timely and collegial way.
• Demonstrates excellent bedside manners.
• Has interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients under physical and emotional stress, and knowledge of handling “bad news”, with possible training.
• Possesses analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, procedures, and fetal anatomy and physiology.
• Can stand and walk most of the day.
• Follows the “Culture of Service Excellence.”
• Executes paperwork and enters patients in the computer in a timely fashion to maintain patient flow pace.
• Prepares equipment and supplies at the beginning of the day, during patient care, and at the end of the day.
• Is knowledgeable about equipment operation, identifies malfunctions, and notifies MFM attending for repairs.
• Is knowledgeable with the method used to clean and disinfect equipment and follows that method strictly.
• Maintains effective working relations and communications with division members (sonographers, MFM staff, genetic counsellor, perinatal nurse).
• May assist OB/GYN attendings in OR with ultrasound guidance after approval of MFM staff.
• Follows “Med Teams” mentality in division and hospital; participates in clerical duties if needed on rare occasions to facilitate smooth division function.
• Communicates information to referring physicians in a timely fashion if needed.
• Participates in training of sonographer students, residents, MFM fellows, genetic counsellor students as deemed necessary by the MFM staff/director.
• Willing to travel with MFM staff to learn new processes and techniques.
• Acknowledges and participates in research programs, quality assurance and quality improvement projects carried on in the division/department.
• Must be NT certified or become within 1 year of employment; division will cover cost. If the sonographer no longer works at least for 1 year following certification, the division will have to reimburse the full amount incurred.
• Remains up to date on developments and trends in the MFM field.
• Fosters a culture of safety.
• Performs exams in accordance with National Patient Safety guidelines (two points of patient ID, time out).
• Utilizes universal precaution techniques.
• Transports and transfers patients using established procedures according to hospital guidelines.

Minimum Education

Graduate of accredited Ultrasound Program required.

Minimum Work Experience

At least 2 years of Level II scanning preferred.

Required Licenses / Registrations

RDMS or eligible – Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

License/Registration/Certification Requirements

• Diagnostic Medical Sonography Registration Eligible – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
