Job summary

Newark Board of Education, through the Office of Facilities Management, seeks a Per Diem Custodian to support cleaning, maintenance, and facility operations. The role reports to the Principal/Supervisor of Custodians and requires managing materials, scheduling tasks, and ensuring safe heating equipment use.

Qualified candidates have a High School diploma or equivalent, at least two years in related work, an active Black Seal Boiler Operator License, and a NJ driver license if driving is needed.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• At least 2 years of experience in heating, cleaning, and maintenance.
• Current Black Seal Boiler Operator License (high or low pressure).
• New Jersey Driver's license if vehicle operation is essential.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and determine cleaning work and materials needed.
• Develop and supervise work plans for subordinates.
• Lead cleaning, maintenance, and care of buildings, grounds, and furniture.
• Oversee safe operation of HVAC equipment and elevator operators.
• Inspect buildings and grounds to identify conditions and ensure work is performed.
• Obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and supervise equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Maintain records of personnel, equipment, materials, supplies, and time spent.
• Report needed repairs to authorities.
• Learn to utilize electronic and/or manual recording systems.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Definition

Under direction, supervises and works with custodial personnel engaged in cleaning and maintenance of a school building and grounds. The duties may vary; this description illustrates typical responsibilities.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Graduation from high school, vocational school, or possession of an approved high school equivalent certificate.
• At least two (2) years of experience involving heating, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of furniture, fixtures, offices, buildings, and grounds.
• Current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License (high or low pressure) issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
• Driver's license valid in New Jersey required only if vehicle operation is essential for the position.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities

• Inspect, analyze, and determine cleaning work and materials needed.
• Establish, maintain, and develop effective work plans for subordinates.
• Supervise and lead cleaning, maintenance, and care of buildings, grounds, and furniture.
• Supervise safe operation of heating, ventilating equipment, and supervision of elevator operators.
• Inspect buildings and grounds to identify significant conditions and ensure required work is performed.
• Obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and supervise the use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Maintain records of personnel, equipment, materials, supplies, work completed, and time spent.
• Report needed repairs to the authorities.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Knowledge of inspection, analysis, and planning for building and ground maintenance and HVAC work.
• Knowledge of procedures for establishing and maintaining work procedures, records, and materials.
• Ability to analyze maintenance problems and develop effective work methods.
• Ability to give clear assignments and instructions.
• Ability to associate with children and school staff.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently for the duties of the position; alternative communication methods may be considered.
