Job summary

Kenilworth Public Schools anticipates a Custodial/Maintenance position for 2026-2027. This full-time, 12-month role involves districtwide upkeep, HVAC work, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and safety compliance under the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.

The ideal candidate holds a valid New Jersey Black Seal Low-Pressure Boiler Operator's License and has 3+ years of facilities experience. Skills in reading, writing, and communicating with staff and vendors are essential.

Qualifications

• NJ Black Seal Low-Pressure Boiler Operator's License is required.
• Experience in building maintenance and repair including HVAC, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively with staff, supervisors, and vendors.
• Ability to meet physical demands and pass pre-employment physical.
• 3+ years custodial/maintenance experience preferred in school or similar setting.
• Relevant trade certifications/licenses preferred and recognized.
• Knowledge of safety procedures including Hazard Communication/Right-to-Know, silica exposure, asbestos awareness/AHERA, bloodborne pathogens, chemical safety, indoor air quality, and IPM.
• Knowledge of fire safety systems and related procedures.
• Experience with snow/ice removal and operation of equipment.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively; respond to routine maintenance and emergencies.
• Criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal status required.

• Working knowledge and demonstrated experience in building maintenance and repair, including HVAC systems (automated and mechanical), carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.
• Ability to read, write, understand instructions, and communicate effectively with staff, supervisors, and vendors.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the position and successfully complete any required pre-employment physical examination.
• Minimum of three (3) years of custodial, maintenance, or facilities experience in a school or similar institutional setting preferred.
• Relevant trade certifications and/or current professional licenses are preferred and will be recognized.
• Knowledge of applicable workplace and school safety procedures, including Hazard Communication/Right- to-Know, silica exposure, asbestos awareness/AHERA, bloodborne pathogens, chemical safety, indoor air quality, and integrated pest management.
• Working knowledge of fire safety systems, equipment, and related operating procedures.
• Experience with snow and ice removal, including the safe operation of applicable equipment.
• Ability to safely operate custodial and maintenance tools, machinery, and equipment associated with the position.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively and to respond appropriately to routine maintenance needs and emergency situations.
