Job summary

Brown University Health seeks a Behavioral Health Navigator to provide immediate, compassionate support in the Emergency Department for individuals in acute psychological distress. Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in a mental health field.
  • Independently licensed with MA license (e.g., LICSW/LMHC).
  • 3–5 years of clinical hospital experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial emergency interviews and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate patient dispositions and referrals with ED staff.
  • Document assessments and plans in the EMR per HIPAA and regulations.
  • Collaborate with outside agencies for discharge planning.
  • Provide education on inpatient bed search and care options.
  • Complete insurance authorizations for inpatient psychiatric admissions.

SUMMARY

A Behavioral Health Navigator plays a vital role in providing immediate and compassionate support to individuals presenting to the Emergency Department in acute psychological distress. This position requires a professional who is adept at performing risk assessments, developing crisis intervention strategies, and connecting patients with appropriate resources for ongoing care. Working in a fast-paced and often high-pressure environment, our Crisis Clinicians must demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of mental health issues, and the ability to remain calm and decisive in emergencies. RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conducts initial emergency interviews and diagnostic evaluations to determine most appropriate level of care
  • Obtains collateral information from family, significant others, friends, providers, police, and state agencies to support decision-making
  • Conducts re-evaluations/mental status updates and completes appropriate documentation according to state and insurance regulations
  • Submits EPIA forms to DMH to expedite inpatient admissions for those boarding in the ED for extended periods of time
  • Works collaboratively with Access Clinicians in coordinating patient dispositions and referrals
  • Provides patient and families with education on the inpatient bed search process
  • Facilitates meetings with outside agencies when necessary for discharge planning
  • Provides lower level of care referrals for patients who do not require an inpatient bed search (IOP, PHP, OP, MCI, etc.)
  • Collaborates with ED physicians and nurses on patient care plans
  • Consults with ED psychiatrist and nurses during daily rounds
  • Documents assessments, interventions, and plans in the EMR according to HIPPA, industry, and compliance standards.
  • Completes insurance authorizations ofr inpatient psychiatric admissions
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's Degree or higher education in a mental health discipline.
  • Independently licensed with a Massachusetts state issued clinical practice license (e.g., LICSW, LMHC).
  • The Behavioral Health Navigator must have a solid foundation in mental health care, including 3-5 years of clinical experience (preferably in a hospital environment), relevant certifications, and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical practice.
  • Additionally, successful candidates will possess excellent communication skills, resilience, and the capacity to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals in a high paced setting.
