Job summary

PennDOT is seeking a CDL Operator (Transportation Equipment Operator A) in Montgomery County to support highway and bridge maintenance. The role blends equipment operation with physical labor while prioritizing safety and compliance with CDL requirements. Starting salary is $45,888 annually.

Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with no telework option. Candidates must meet CDL and medical certification requirements and be prepared for drug testing and veterans' preference

Qualifications

• Minimum Experience and Training: complete the TRAINEE program or CDL training school or equivalent.
• All employees must obtain active Pennsylvania CDL with Air Brake Restriction removed.
• All employees must obtain Medical Examiner's Certificate per FMCSA regulations.

Responsibilities

• Operate trucks, loaders, and equipment for highway/bridge maintenance.
• Maintain CDL credentials and perform daily inspections and documentation.
• Assist with flagging and traffic management when not operating equipment.
• Perform manual labor such as clearing culverts, cutting brush, erecting signs.
• Carry out routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs.
• Follow safety procedures and report hazards or incidents.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports highway and bridge maintenance by operating equipment and performing manual labor tasks that keep roadways safe and functional. The work blends equipment operation, physical labor, and strong attention to safety. As a PennDOT CDL Operator, you will perform the following duties:

• Equipment Operation: Operate trucks, loaders, and additional machinery needed for maintenance activities
• License Compliance: Maintain CDL credentials and complete required daily equipment inspections and documentation
• Traffic Control: Assist with flagging and traffic management duties when not operating equipment
• Manual Labor Tasks: Perform physical work such as clearing culverts, cutting brush, erecting signs, and using hand and power tools
• Equipment Care: Carry out routine maintenance, field adjustments, and minor repairs to keep equipment safe and functional
• Safety Awareness: Follow safety procedures, identify hazards, and report incidents to protect the crew and the traveling public

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,888 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) Program; or
• Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

• All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
• All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
• All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
• Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
• All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.

Additional Requirements:

• This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
