Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, through PennDOT, is seeking a CDL Operator in Tioga County for a hands-on role maintaining safe roads and supporting road and bridge upkeep. You will operate trucks and loaders, perform manual tasks, and ensure equipment records, with safety as a priority.

Work hours are 7:00 AM–3:00 PM, Monday to Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Travel and overtime may be required; telework is not available. Starting salary for new hires begins at $45,888 per year, before taxes.

Qualifications

• Completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee program or CDL training.
• Active Pennsylvania Class A or B CDL with Air Brake and Manual Transmission restrictions removed.
• Ability to operate manual transmission equipment and pass drug testing.

This position plays a key role in operating highway maintenance equipment and supporting road and bridge upkeep. The work includes equipment operation, manual labor, and efforts that promote safety for workers and the public. As a PennDOT CDL Operator, you will perform the following duties:

• Equipment Operation: Operate trucks, loaders, and other assigned machinery while completing daily checks and basic maintenance
• Traffic Control: Perform flagging duties when needed to help manage traffic safely during work activities
• Manual Labor Tasks: Use hand tools and motorized tools to perform work such as clearing brush, repairing guiderails, and cleaning culverts
• Equipment Care: Make field adjustments, carry out minor repairs, and keep accurate equipment records
• Safety Awareness: Follow safety procedures, report hazards, and use protective equipment to maintain a safe work environment

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) Program; or
• Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements

• This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake (L) and Manual Transmission (E) Restrictions removed.
• This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
• This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
• This position requires possession of an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
• This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
• This position may require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.

• This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
