THE POSITION
Are you ready to enhance your technical skills while helping to keep Pennsylvania roads safe and well maintained? The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is searching for a motivated PennDOT CDL Operator who is eager to assist with important roadway and bridge work across the state. This role allows you to operate equipment, work with a dedicated crew, and help keep communities safe. You will learn valuable techniques that support strong teamwork and reliable transportation.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position focuses on operating highway maintenance equipment and completing manual labor tasks that support road and bridge work. Primary functions will involve the safe operation of equipment and tools, as well as effectively collaborating with a highway crew. As a PennDOT CDL Operator, you will perform the following duties:
- Equipment Operation: Operate trucks, loaders, and other machinery needed for road and bridge maintenance
- License Maintenance: Maintain CDL qualifications and complete required safety and inspection checks
- Traffic Control: Perform flagger duties to help direct vehicles safely through work zones
- Manual Tasks: Use hand tools and equipment to complete tasks such as digging, cutting brush, and repairing barriers
- Equipment Care: Perform basic repairs, make adjustments, and keep equipment clean and ready for use
- Safety Awareness: Follow safety rules, report hazards, and support a safe work environment for coworkers and the public
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Work hours may vary due to seasonal requirements.
- This position may require dual shifts, overtime, and travel.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
- Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) Program; or
- Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed. This position also requires that the E restriction is removed.
- This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
- This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- All permanent employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
- All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
- Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
Additional Requirements:
- This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
