PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee (Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee)

Position Overview

Engage in a six-month training program to develop skills necessary for operating highway construction and maintenance equipment. Upon completion, progress to the Transportation Equipment Operator A classification. This role involves manual labor tasks and equipment operation within a highway or bridge maintenance team.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operate equipment such as Heavy Truck/Tandem Axle (HT/TA) and loaders with a bucket capacity of 4.5 cubic yards or less.
2. Perform and document pre- and post-operation checks, make field adjustments for safety and efficiency.
3. Assist with manual labor tasks using hand tools like shovels, rakes, hammers, chain saws, and patching machines.

Work Schedule & Additional Information

• Full-time, Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Travel, overtime, and shift work may be required based on operational needs.
• Salary starts at $40,607 annually for new employees.
• Note: Telework is not available for this position.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
• Valid Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day.
• Valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per FMCSA regulations on the first day.
• Ability to perform essential job functions.
• Operation of manual transmission vehicles may be required.
