Qualifications

The PennDOT CDL Operator A position with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) gives you the chance to utilize important equipment that keeps highways and bridges in good condition. You will collaborate with highway crews, assist with roadway repairs, and support daily maintenance activities. This role helps you develop strong skills through hands-on work in the field.

This position supports highway and bridge maintenance by operating equipment, completing repairs, and handling manual laboring tasks. Within this role, you will help maintain safe travel conditions by responding to seasonal needs and routine maintenance requirements. As a PennDOT CDL Operator A, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Operation:Operate trucks, loaders, and other assigned machinery for maintenance activities
  • License Compliance:Maintain required CDL credentials and complete pre and post operational checks
  • Traffic Control:Perform flagging duties to guide and protect traffic when equipment is not being operated
  • Manual Labor:Use motorized and non motorized tools to complete tasks such as cleaning culverts, cutting brush, and repairing guiderails
  • Equipment Care:Make field adjustments, perform minor repairs, clean equipment, and assist mechanics
  • Safety Actions:Observe work areas, follow safety procedures, report hazards, and use protective equipment
  • Environmental Duties:Follow environmental protection requirements for maintenance activities and training

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work are required. Work hours are subject to change based upon seasonal requirements and operational needs
  • Telework:You will not have the option to telework in this position

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) Program; or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
  • All permanent employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
Additional Requirements:
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
