Job summary

Chippewa Valley Technical College is seeking part‑time Peer Tutors to support students across subjects in Eau Claire, Menomonie, Neillsville, and River Falls. Pay is $14.00 per hour with less than 19.5 hours per week on average; schedules vary by semester and student needs.

Opportunities include Open Lab Tutor, 1:1 Tutor, and Desk Staff Tutor roles. No guaranteed ongoing employment; training is provided each semester and attendance is tracked.

  • CVTC student or high school diploma or equivalency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring services for students on a walk-in basis in an open lab setting.
  • Provide 30- or 60-minute 1:1 tutoring appointments.
  • Respond to all 1:1 appointment requests.
  • Greet and assist all visitors; answer calls and manage emails.
  • Attend mandatory paid training at the beginning of every semester.
  • Participate in ongoing training; check staff email and maintain attendance logs.
  • Relate successfully with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Use Canvas and Microsoft Office.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Overview and Responsibilities

These are part‑time employment opportunities for individuals to tutor students needing additional academic assistance in various subject areas. This is a great opportunity to build leadership, communication and professional skills while earning extra money.

Note: There is no guarantee of continued employment from semester to semester. Semester work schedules are set at the start but may change based on student needs.

There are several tutor positions available:

Open Lab Tutor

Provide tutoring services for students on a walk‑in basis in an open lab setting. Tutors may provide 1:1 appointments out of open lab times by appointment only.

  • Provide 30‑ or 60‑minute 1:1 tutoring appointments
  • Assist students as needed
  • Be knowledgeable of Academic Support processes
  • Maintain and record peer tutor attendance logs
  • Track tutee attendance
1:1 Tutor

Provide 1:1 tutoring by appointment only. Sessions will cover only a specified content area.

  • Respond to all 1:1 appointment requests
  • Provide 30‑ or 60‑minute 1:1 tutoring appointments
  • Maintain and record peer tutor attendance logs
Desk Staff Tutor
  • Greet and assist all visitors
  • Answer incoming calls
  • Manage email communications
  • Maintain and record peer tutor attendance logs
  • Record student time in lab
  • Assist in student outreach and promotion of department services
  • Participate in meetings as required
  • Work alongside Academic Support lab instructor(s)
  • Use good judgement when handling confidential information
  • Operate office equipment (telephone system, printer, scanner, etc.)
All Tutor Responsibilities
  • Attend mandatory paid training at the beginning of every semester
  • Participate in ongoing training throughout the semester
  • Check staff e‑mail account regularly
  • Participate in and utilize tutoring resources
  • Be dependable, flexible, approachable, encouraging, and supportive
  • Communicate regularly with Learning Center Coordinator and Instructor (if applicable)
  • Demonstrate commitment to service excellence standards
  • Relate successfully with students and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Excel within the academic area they are tutoring in
  • Be knowledgeable with Canvas and Microsoft Office
  • Be patient, friendly, and supportive when working with students
  • Perform other duties as assigned
