Job summary

Olive-Harvey College seeks a part-time Peer Tutor for the Economics Department to help students develop competency in course work and improve study skills. This role includes tutoring individuals or groups under supervision and participating in required tutor trainings.

Applicants must be at least 16, actively enrolled at City Colleges of Chicago, and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. Prior tutoring is preferred, with compensation at $17.05 per hour and flexible hours available to fit student

PEER TUTOR PART TIME – ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT
OLIVE-HARVEY COLLEGE

Olive-Harvey College is currently seeking a part-time Peer Tutor for the Economics Department. A Peer Tutor provides academic assistance and support to other students, providing individual and/or group tutoring to assist students in developing competency in course work, improve study skills and become independent learners.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Under the general direction of the assigned supervisor, the Peer Tutor provides general academic support including tutorial services, basic skills assistance and some general office duties for various City Colleges of Chicago academic departments.
  • Provide students with basic skills assistance in the academic area needed.
  • Provides one-on-one support and encouragement to help student(s) develop increased sense of self confidence and become an independent learner.
  • Engage tutees in active learning, and provides academic assistance and support to help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
  • Listens and answers questions during tutoring sessions, helping students how to learn the material, develop and improve appropriate study skills and become independent learners.
  • Attends and successfully completes required tutor training meetings.
  • Plans tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to help students better understand the course content and concepts, problem solve, and improve study skills.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Eligibility Requirements:
  • Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and eligible to work in the United States
  • Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours pre-credit or credit classes
  • Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate
  • Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students)
  • Applicants must be in “good standing” and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions
  • Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago
  • All positions are “employment at-will”
Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
  • Working knowledge of subject area or course content to be tutored.
  • Some knowledge of tutoring strategies used to assist tutees in learning how to think and
  • problem solve in the context of a specific discipline/ subject area.
  • Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Reasoning and problem solving skills
  • Skill in tutoring students and explaining content in more than one way
  • Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment
  • Ability to manage tasks, manage time and maintain schedules
  • Ability to guide tutoring sessions
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma required or actively pursuing a GED at the City Colleges of Chicago
  • 3.0 overall GPA and 4.0 GPA in a specific subject matter.
  • Strong background in math, science, literature, or other assigned academic subject matter
  • Ability to work in a one-on-one or team environment with flexible work hours as needed for scheduled shifts
  • Prior experience in tutoring duties preferred, but not required

Student worker rate is $17.05/hr. If variance from $17.00/hr is required, College HR/Recruitment must discuss with District Compensation.
The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
