PEER TUTOR PART TIME - ADULT EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OLIVE-HARVEY COLLEGE
Olive-Harvey College is currently seeking a part-time Peer Tutor for the Adult Education Department. A Peer Tutor provides academic assistance and support to other students, providing individual and/or group tutoring to assist students in developing competency in course work, improving study skills, and becoming independent learners.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Provide students with basic academic skills assistance in the area needed.
- Offer one‑on‑one support and encouragement to help students develop a sense of self‑confidence and become independent learners.
- Engage tutees in active learning and give academic assistance to foster a positive attitude toward learning and studying.
- Listen and answer questions during tutoring sessions, helping students learn how to study the material and develop appropriate study skills.
- Attend and successfully complete required tutor training meetings.
- Plan tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to help students better understand course content, solve problems, and improve study skills for academic success.
- Provide clerical support and perform general office duties, including data entry, scheduling appointments, answering phones, filing, and photocopying.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Be 16 years or older and eligible to work in the United States.
- Actively attend one of the City Colleges of Chicago.
- Be enrolled in an ESL Transition level course, or be working toward a high school diploma with a minimum of NRS Level 4 High Intermediate.
- Maintain a pattern of good class attendance.
- Provide a recommendation from an instructor or administration.
- Show demonstrated academic progress by making a level gain.
- Be in good standing and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.
- Not be a current full‑time or part‑time employee of the City Colleges of Chicago.
- All positions are employment at‑will.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong background in math, science, social studies, language arts, ESL, or other assigned subject area being tutored.
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
- Previous experience in tutoring and/or office work preferred, but not required.
- Working knowledge of subject area or course content to be tutored.
- Some knowledge of tutoring strategies that help tutees learn how to think and problem‑solve in the discipline context.
- Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Organizational and time‑management skills.
- Reasoning and problem‑solving skills.
- Skill in tutoring students and explaining content in multiple ways.
- Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.
- Ability to manage tasks, time, and maintain schedules.
- Ability to guide tutoring sessions.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Salary: $17.00 per hour
