Job summary

City Colleges of Chicago's Truman College is seeking a part-time chemistry Peer Tutor to support fellow students in developing competency in chemistry, improve study skills, and become independent learners.

Under supervision, you will provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring, plan sessions, and help students understand concepts, attend training, and maintain flexible hours to fit class schedules. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and active enrollment at City Colleges.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3.0 overall GPA, and 4.0 GPA in the subject matter.
• Able to work in a one-on-one or group tutoring setting with flexible hours.

Responsibilities

• Provide general academic support including tutoring services and basic skills assistance.
• Offer one-on-one tutoring and encourage independent learning.
• Plan tutoring sessions using collaborative learning to improve understanding.
• Engage tutees to develop effective study skills and positive attitudes toward learning.
• Attend required tutor training meetings and perform related duties as needed.

PEER TUTOR PART TIME - CHEMISTRY

TRUMAN COLLEGE

Truman College is currently seeking a part-time chemistry Peer Tutor. A Peer Tutor provides academic assistance and support to other students, providing individual and/or group tutoring to assist students in developing competency in course work, improve study skills and become independent learners.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Under the general direction of the assigned supervisor, the Peer Tutor provides general academic support including tutorial services, basic skills assistance and some general office duties for various City Colleges of Chicago academic departments.
• Provide students with basic skills assistance in the academic area needed.
• Provides one-on-one support and encouragement to help student(s) develop increased sense of self confidence and become an independent learner.
• Engage tutees in active learning, and provides academic assistance and support to help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
• Listens and answers questions during tutoring sessions, helping students how to learn the material, develop and improve appropriate study skills and become independent learners.
• Attends and successfully completes required tutor training meetings.
• Plans tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to help students better understand the course content and concepts, problem solve, and improve study skills.
• Performs related duties as required.
  
  

Eligibility Requirements

• Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and eligible to work in the United States
• Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago
• Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours pre-credit or credit classes
• Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate
• Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students)
• Applicants must be in “good standing” and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions
• Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago
• All positions are “employment at-will”

• Working knowledge of subject area or course content to be tutored.
• Some knowledge of tutoring strategies used to assist tutees in learning how to think and
• problem solve in the context of a specific discipline/ subject area.
• Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

• Skill in tutoring students and explaining content in more than one way
• Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment
• Ability to manage tasks, manage time and maintain schedules

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma required or actively pursuing a GED at the City Colleges of Chicago
• 3.0 overall GPA and 4.0 GPA in a specific subject matter.
• Strong background in math, science, literature, or other assigned academic subject matter
• Ability to work in a one-on-one or team environment with flexible work hours as needed for scheduled shifts
• Prior experience in tutoring duties preferred, but not required.
  
  

Salary: $17.00/hr

The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
