Responsibilities

  • Work with EMS and BCRI teams to support individuals in substance use issues or homelessness.
  • Develop crisis plans and linkage to care for individuals in crisis.
  • Respond to overdoses in Baltimore City to connect clients with services.
  • Provide mental health, addiction, and peer recovery support.
  • Build relationships with community resources and providers.
  • Document all clinical and client-related information accurately.
  • Maintain professional communication with clients, staff, and outside agencies.
  • Encourage self-advocacy and recovery planning.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with clients and staff.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Peer Support Specialist to work alongside Emergency Medical Services in Baltimore City, providing brief crisis intervention for individuals experiencing substance use issues or overdoses. In this role, you’ll connect people to recovery programs, coordinate care, and offer support for mental health, addiction, and homelessness challenges.

What You’ll Do
  • Work collaboratively with members of EMS and other members of BCRI’s team to provide support and resources to individuals experiencing substance use issues or homelessness.
  • Work with individuals in a substance use crisis to develop a crisis plan, provide linkage to care and introduce other crisis planning tools as needed.
  • Respond alongside EMS to overdoses in Baltimore City to provide linkage and connection to services.
  • Assist individuals in crisis to maintain continuity of care by offering mental health, addiction, and peer recovery support and other necessary resources.
  • Build relationships with addiction, mental health and homeless outreach providers, peer recovery support and other community resources.
  • Perform timely and accurate documentation of all clinical and client‑related information.
  • Maintain professional, open, effective, and appropriate communication with clients, BCRI staff, management, outside agencies and the public.
  • Empower participants to become self‑advocates for their own recovery and wellness.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with clients, staff and other outside agencies.
  • Work with all clients from a strengths‑based perspective, providing support and encouragement as they move forward in recovery.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Additional Required
  • Valid driver’s license.
Physical Demands

Moderate walking, standing, climbing stairs, and sitting required. Light lifting may be required. Transportation of clients and their belongings in agency vehicles. Minimal support and assistance with client care needs.

Working Conditions

Works as part of a Mobile Team, providing services in the community. Visits clients in various community settings and on the streets. When in the office, works generally in a well‑lit and ventilated office environment.

Hazards

Potential exposure to highly charged, stressful and emotional situations, and potential exposure to aggressive encounters.
