Job summary

Resources for Human Development (RHD) is seeking a Peer Support Specialist in Wilmington, DE. This role involves providing recovery-oriented peer support to individuals facing mental health and/or substance use challenges, leveraging lived experience to foster hope, resilience, and self-determination.

You will work within an interdisciplinary ACT/ACT Plus team to develop wellness goals, facilitate peer groups, and help clients access housing, education, and community resources.

Qualifications

  • Strong communication, both verbal and written, with clients and team members.
  • Accurate documentation and recordkeeping in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practices.
  • Ability to assess client needs and connect to resources.
  • Ability to work within interdisciplinary teams and coordinate care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide recovery-oriented peer support services.
  • Utilize lived experience to promote hope and resilience.
  • Assist clients in developing wellness plans and recovery goals.
  • Facilitate peer-led groups and activities.

What You'll Do

As a Peer Specialist, you will:

  • Provide recovery-oriented peer support services to individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges.
  • Utilize your lived experience to promote hope, recovery, resilience, empowerment, and self-determination.
  • Assist individuals in developing wellness plans, recovery goals, and coping strategies.
  • Facilitate peer-led support groups and recovery-focused activities.
  • Support individuals in pursuing goals related to housing, employment, education, and community integration.
  • Participate as an active member of an interdisciplinary ACT/ACT Plus treatment team.
  • Advocate for individuals and support self-advocacy efforts.
  • Help individuals prepare for treatment planning and recovery meetings.
  • Provide education regarding recovery-oriented practices and peer support principles.
  • Build community connections and natural support networks.
  • Offer outreach, engagement, and ongoing support services.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation.

Qualifications
Required
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Minimum three (3) years of continuous driving experience
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification, or ability to obtain upon hire
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality
  • Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to successfully complete required background screenings and employment requirements
Preferred
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Lived experience with mental health recovery, substance use recovery, or co-occurring conditions
  • Experience working with underserved populations
  • Experience supporting individuals with mental health, substance use, or co-occurring disorders
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to assess individual needs and connect individuals to appropriate resources

Schedule
  • Flexible scheduling based on program needs
  • Community-based and office-based responsibilities
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required
  • Travel throughout the community may be required
  • Work schedules may vary based on operational needs
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, twist, and climb stairs
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to perform community-based support activities
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation

Work is performed in a variety of settings, including:

  • Modern office environments

  • Participant homes and community programs
  • Multiple program and office locations

This position may require frequent travel and interaction with individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges in both office and community settings.
